McGinn Eats Mallahan Alive

Posted by on Wed, Oct 21, 2009 at 8:58 PM

You really should just watch the whole thing, but if you're pressed for time and want the highlights of tonight's debate: Don't miss this one. Also: don't miss this one or this one or this one or this one.

I heard McGinn's voice for the first time on the radio tonight (guess it was after the debate).

I had no idea he was so intelligent and articulate. He'd be an awesome mayor.

Dow here.

Why are you watching guy who looks like a burly logger and another who should be doing cell phone commercials when you could be getting YouTube Constantine Redux of me last night.

Yeah, I know, it was awful for me of course. There I was...sharp as a tack...and she...she came along! I can't believe it...I've worked so hard for this! And you know, last night, when I went visit with some of my old UW chums and who shows up but Terasa. "Hey Girl" I said and she was all..."Dow, get out! Your suit was edgy. Edgy like a knife"...and I'm like "Keep the balloon away or it may POP".

"The mayor should plow the streets before he thinks about taking over the schools".

Poor Joe Plow. 21% of voters are undecided, and he can't even represent himself on a televised debate.

I watched the debate, McGinn made some good personal points, but failed to articulate his skills and abilities to run a 10,000 government.

Being a lawyer for 15 years?
Getting tax payers to provide parks near Vulcan development projects?
Really, that is his management experience?

I know the Strangler faithfull will imagine all kinds of things, including what was meaningful in the debate.
I might hire McGinn as a lawyer, but I will not vote for him as executive.

Mallahan's no manager either. He's an "idea man", i.e., a regurgitator of MBA catch-phrases.

Mr.Baker has only one comment about the debate. I've seen it on all of the posts so far.

@6: MrBaker doesn't know how a city works, so don't worry about it.

And another debate on teevee tomorrow, and then again Friday. A play in three acts. Love it.

Maybe next debate Joe will learn not to look off at the clowns but at the audience.

Seattle can't afford to give Mallahan on the job training. We'll be broke if we have to go through that.

@4 and if you think mid-level management experience in the private sector (hell, any level management, even CEO) is a qualification for running a large governmental organization as a politically elected official then you clearly have worked in neither and have little understanding of how they operate.

People who think business success translates into government success tend to be remarkably ill-informed about how government actually functions.

Mallahan is Ross Perot without the bad accent and better height/hair/ears.

@6, it is true, saying here once, or all over the internet. McGinn is not fit for the executive position for Seattle.
Until he can actually answer that question, I will keep saying it.

Btw, McGinn has two more Mondays to change his mind about the tunnel.

Sadly, I do know how the city works. The Council will run his obstructionist ass over.

Mallahan's ass? You got that right. He's toast if he get's elected. He'll be one and done and Burgess will take him to the cleaners. He'll be driving his this and thats right back to Wallingford for a hotdog,

Sorry I don't see the slam dunk here for McGinn on who gave the better answer about the Tunnel. Your so in the bag for McGinn you've becoming more and more delusional as you see your oh so groovy candidate sinking. Is McGinn for the freaking tunnel on not? I'll protect the citizens from cost overruns distortion that McGinn keeps using is a desperate scare tactic. He strikes me as more and more of a phony. Mallahan isn't Jesus Christ either but he comes across as genuine. Perhaps he not up to your look down your nose at everybody standards but I think he can be trusted for at least four years as mayor. Here's the link on tunnel cost overruns. http://publicola.net/?p=16368

Let's play 2 degrees of Joe Mallahan!

1) Joe Mallahan is a conservative Catholic who lists his only public service experience as organizing the Wallingford Wurst Festival, a fundraiser for the conservative Catholic St. Benedict School.
2) St. Benedict School hosts anti-abortion rallies featuring ravenous anti-gay pastor Ken Hutcherson!

Well, if there was any shred of hope Mallahan had for my vote he lost it. He dodged almost every single question, what an idiot.

This is my first exposure to either McG or J.M., beyond what I have read in the Stranger. I have to say I was expecting something else. J.M. did not seem so bad and McG seemed peeved and just OK. I checked out the a couple of the must watch moments recommended above and did not see a floor mopping or totally embarrassing answers by J.M.
Did I miss something?
I'll still vote McG but have much less faith in his victory.

How many stereo speakers have you bought from men in parking lots?

If none... would you like to buy some?

Mallahan seems like he'll be a 'wait and see' Mayor. He doesn't seem to have a core set of principles on which to make decisions. That means he'll be instantly overwhelmed, because despite governent's reputation for slowness, things actually move pretty quickly for the executive and you have to be several steps ahead. I fear Joe won't be able to move quickly enough. T-mobile is a big, lumbering organization. McGinn's nimble campaign experience (he's been through three significant, recent, levy campaigns successfully) means he knows the players, the process, and has the principals to help guide his decision-makng.

Both candidates are flawed, but McGinn is the stronger candidate.

Does anyone find transparent shilling from campaign staffers like the comment @ 20 as irritating as I do? I see this on blogs all over and always feel like my intelligence is being insulted.

This is the first I've actually seen Mallahan speak. Gives me flashbacks to Paul Schell, the last moneybags empty suit who bought himself the mayorship. That worked out great, right?

"McGinn Eats Mallahan Alive"

A headline that was no doubt written before the debate even started.

I'm inclinced to vote for McGinn, but I do wish he hadn't suggested light rail over 520. As the article states, that idea has been explored at length already, and at some expense. It's done. Maybe when 520 is rebuilt, you can incorporate light rail-friendly design/routes, but the existing structure is a no-go. McGinn looked foolish by floating that idea.

Having said that, I like my mayor to be pushy, full of piss and vinegar, and that's McGinn. I actually liked Nickels because he was a pushy bastard who got stuff done, and McGinn seems the same, only more progressively-minded. 'Course, Nickels said a lot of progressive stuff too.

But Mallahan? There's a picture in the dictionary of him next to the phrase "empty suit."

It's funny, Schmacky - take a look at yesterday's SLOG post regarding Hutchison & light rail. You can see McGinn & Mallahan supporters alike attacking her in the comments for wanting it to run over 520.

Now, contrast that with the 520 discussion in the comment thread for the mayoral debate. You can watch McGinn supporters twist themselves into knots over how his idea of running light rail over 520 is the best & people who believe otherwise just don't understand.

@24, 25: it's a pity the press can't differentiate between Hutchison and Mike's positions on light rail. She says do 520 INSTEAD of 90. He says do 90 for sure, first and foremost. But also do 520. Those are completely different positions. The press then says "McGinn agrees with Hutchison on 520 light rail". Ay! C'mon, press!

@27: That's right. However, the issue is that 520, whether in conjunction with or to the exclusion of I-90, is simply not a viable light-rail route in its current incarnation. If McGinn (or Hutchinson) want to talk about their plans for altering the scope of what currently exists around the upcoming 520 rebuild so that light rail is included, fine. But that's not what either of them have done, and it makes them both look silly.
