Dwight Pelz: A Conservative Democrat

Posted by Dominic Holden on Wed, Oct 21, 2009 at 1:27 PM

Dwight Pelz, chair of the Washington State Democratic Party, endorsed Joe Mallahan for mayor today. In a statement clearly written for him by Mallahan's campaign, he whipped out an already-hackneyed attack: "I've been disappointed time and again by Joe’s opponent, Mike McGinn. He’s a one-issue candidate, now a no issue candidate, who clearly doesn’t get our biggest issue —-Seattle’s flagging economy and loss of good, family wage jobs. I am confident that as Mayor Joe will take steps to put Seattle’s economy on the road to recovery."

Pelz, who is an otherwise sensible fellow, is in denial about Mallahan—who has skipped more elections than he's participated in and is the beloved candidate of big business, conservatives, and Republicans. McGinn, meanwhile, has worked on city issues for years and has a broad platform, especially on transportation, urban development, and nightlife. Or does Pelz think that those three industries have no role in putting "Seattle’s economy on the road to recovery"?

Check off one more reason I am voting for Mike McGinn. Dwight has really sold out since his failed bid for city council.

Thank you Dwight! Joe is the right candidate for mayor, and your support of him is greatly appreciated. Joe will work hard to bring blue collar jobs back to Seattle, and work with our friends in Olympia and throughout the region to improve the quality of life so many of us enjoy.
Go Joe!!!

If you like the insiders and how they've been running Seattle into the ground, Dwight's in your corner.

#2: By "quality of life" you mean...? Certainly not better environmental protection or transit jobs. Do you mean quality of life for business executives and out-of-state car and oil companies? I don't follow.

Dwight wants someone in the mayor's office who will be guaranteed to always play nice (or roll over) when dealing with regional and state leaders. We do need to have a less dysfunctional relationship w/Olympia, but not at any cost.

Dominic - you keep repeating your same meek points and show uninformed disregard for Mallahan's positions on issues.

Suggestion: Why don't you take a moment and compare McGinn's positions and Mallahan's positions. They are on their websites.

Or would a little journalism and research rather than your love-struck editorializing be too much for The Stranger?

Joe has stated time after time he's committed to cleaning up Puget Sound, dedicated to efficient and sustainable mass transit, and knows how to create working relationships with business to bring jobs to Seattle.

Check out his website: www.joemallahan.com for more details.

Strong relationships with business executives are how jobs are created, retained, and lured into cities. Mallahan has the experience, McGinn just doesn't.

@7

Can you provide a legitimate reason for voting for Mallahan besides regurgitating a talking point? How about providing some facts?

Mallahan has made this campaign all about McGinn and that will be the reason why McGinn wins if he does.

@6 - awww, are the downtown interests upset that all of Seattle doesn't think they are our rulers?

tough.

McGinn just can't seem to find enough Wills to win this race. That is the problem, not enough people sitting around with tin foil beanies with "McGinn" written on them with vegetable oil. The rest of us, unprotected, have been zapped by the power elite's "logical thinking" ray being transmitted from the antenna on top of the Space Needle.

Must.... take.... the... power... out.............................................

there are only so many of you paid Mallahan staffers and the men, women, and beavers who love them, ralph.

@11 Gosh Will, when do I get paid, and how did you know I was a beaver? You really need to get your conspiracy theories under control, my friend. If there is a conspiracy going on, it is the conspiracy of sanity. I love shooting the shit with you, but at some point you have to realize that the world isn't quite the way you see it beyond the veil of the internet.

Careful Dom - next you'll be labeling people who don't support McGinn as anti-American, or possibly even saying they're harboring sentiment towards terrorists.

some of the best Mallahan supporters I know harbor sentiments toward terrorists.

The established city power structure -- mostly all Democrats and people comfortable working with them -- are gravitating to Mallahan. No surprise here.

But like most ordinary people, I don't have entre with folks at that level. I expect I will have it with McGinn and his people in charge.

Vote McGinn.

The word cult does come to mind when talking to Mc Ginn supporters. And, there is nothing unique about any of his stuff.

Most of us already live and espouse it - I do not need a cult to be involved in civic good deeds.

So ... after the Mallahan victory, maybe Mc Ginn can use his voice to find revenue so we can feed the hungry in the budget crunch ... Oh, that budget matter.

Of all people, Dwight Pelz is not a "sensible fellow." He's a hack and a blowhard. His endorsement will likely hurt Mallahan, not help.

Dwight is right on here, and is representing a majority of Seattle voters (of which he's one). Double digit loss is what is in store for McGinn.

Further, Dwight is certainly no "conservative". Take a look around there in Pullman Dom, you can find actual Democrats, and yes, they will most likely be conservative. Dwight doesn't really resemble them.

Dwight is articulate, persuasive, and forthright, which is a hell of a lot more than I can say for McGinn.

As much as Pelz is an absolute goober, this indicates that the powers that be may respect the potential benefits accruing to McGinn from the "risk" of changing his stance on the tunnel.

They're probably worried that undecideds may actually start to move toward McGinn.

so many mallahan supporters, so few concrete reasons to vote for mallahan. who's AGAINST cleaning up puget sound? btw, most of puget sound ISN'T IN SEATTLE.

face it: BOTH of them are inexperienced risks, but i believe that mcginn has an ethical center and has been more involved in civic affairs throughout his career.

Dominic, seriously? Really? Dwight Pelz conservative? Take a couple of deep breaths. Your corner of the Democratic Party just keeps getting smaller and smaller.

I love Pelz. Great guy - but look at his recent past endorsements - they almost all lost. So this one is good for McGin. Dwight's job is to raise money for the Dem party. A lot of that money comes from the construction unions. Those unions support Mallahan for no other reason than the tunnel. That's all this endorsement is about.

But also, great! Mallahan has become the candidate of the same people who backed Nickels. They have money. They are the establishment. They screw the actual people of Seattle. McGinn is the People's candidate. So if you're a person, vote McGinn!

By the way - I'm an economics major and am partners in 7 businesses. I know a thing or two about the economy. And if you care about long term economic viability then McGinn is the candidate. He will support small business, which is the backbone of the local economy and the engine for creating private sector jobs. Mallahan is about big business getting big handouts for big projects that will sap money away from things real people actually need. Again, Vote McGinn.

Meinert, please cite exactly which "big projects that will sap money away from things real people actually need" Mallahan has expressed support for that McGinn has said he is against. Please cite examples of how McGinn is clearly for small businesses while Mallahan has expressed interest in their demise.

Both candidates have released extensive policy statements and have websites where you can see that they're both fairly similar. The only thing I see repeatedly on SLOG is that McGinn supporters are railing against a candidate who only exists in their heads.
