Slog Tipper Laura writes:

My partner has a sort of lesbian culinary crush on Alton Brown, so thanks to The Stranger for advertising his book reading and signing.

Here is a picture of Alton signing a spaghetti squash we grew this summer. Scruffy looking thing, isn’t he?

Celebrity chef Brown signed books at Third Place Books on October 16th. You wouldn't have missed the signing if you read our readings listings like Laura, who is now the proud owner of an autographed squash:

I saw him at Elliot Bay years back when he was promoting his baking book. It seems like he really let's himself go while on tour cause he was kinda scruffy looking then too.
Oh, how I wish I could have gone to this reading, but you needed to buy the book to go, and I was broke til yesterday. :-(
I *heart* Alton.

Considering he is a born-again Christian and attends the Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta, Georgia, I doubt he would return your partner's affection.

Would have much cooler if he signed her melons.

Cause having a fresh melon from your garden in mid-October would be kickass.

Nook is based on Android.

I wrote that to perplex future cyber historians.

I was once in the Pike Place Sur la Table when I turned the corner and almost walked right into him. I just said "hi" and kept shopping.

@2 Alton regularly works with Ted Allen on Food Network shows and invited him to co-host the Good Eats 10th anniversary special. Alton could be a closet gay-hater, but it doesn't seem likely.

I had a housemate a few years ago, also named Laura, who LOVED Alton Brown. She brewed coffee by adding 12 full coffee measures to a standard 12-"cup" coffeemaker. She said Alton said that it was better to make stronger coffee and then add water to it. Imagine the results, with an overflowing filter basket and crunchy coffee.
To our old pal Laura: if you're reading this, you still owe us 2 months' rent.
To Alton: no offense. I'm sure you're great.

Better sell that thing on eBay but quick.
It won't last more than a few weeks in your fridge or root cellar...

Yeah, I thought that too. Maybe vegetables can be taxidermied. Or pared paper-thin and pressed like a leaf.

Alton who, now?

A few years ago we saw Alton at Third Place Books, and he signed my friend's iBook with a Sharpie.

good eats is by far the most interesting, in-depth, and educational food show on television. i'm kind of addicted.

the 10-year anniversary special was, however....disappointing.

I love his show. Have followed many of his recipes with fantastic results and he rides motorcycles. I would go gay for him.

I don't know how people watch his show. It really is dopey. When his show first came out it was somewhat interesting and informative, but then he quickly developed his shtick, and it just became painful to watch. And his role on the Iron Chef is also a bit painful to listen to. Actually, the food channel used to be interesting but morphed into dopey psuedo entertainment. Wait, cable TV is just dopey, too. It's all dopey. Goofy, too. And Sleepy.

Laura here.

we are trying to figure out how to preserve the squash now... so if anyone knows a vegetable taxidermist (is that even possible???) let us know...

My partner says he was alot butcher in person ... we always assumed he had some fagala genes; but he actually answered a question about his relationship with Ted Allen, as in being good friends but not as good as some people would like them to be. didnt seen like a homophobic comment apparently.

Laura, it's organic material. It's going to rot no matter what you do. Encasing it in Lucite or something along those lines might slow things down a bit, but that's a lot of hassle and expense to go to for something that would only forestall the inevitable.

If you can get the signature area just down to the skin, (cut the chunk out and then slowly scoop off the fleshy back side) you'll probably have something that lasts a bit longer. My suggestion is slathering it in Modge Podge. The Cowboy Junkies signed five sections of sliced italian bread for me a few years back and the chunk is still living quite happily in its modge podge cocoon.

As for AB's scruffiness, I vote to give him a break. He'd been driven straight to the event from the airport and was flying down to Cali at 6am the next day.
