"You Won't Believe It, They're Looking For Experience!"

Posted by on Mon, Oct 19, 2009 at 12:52 PM

Remember this ad?

Back in 2008, Republican Congressman Dave Reichert used it to paint Democratic challenger Darcy Burner as too partisan and inexperienced for the job. Burner was someone, the ad suggested, who had no political pedigree, possessed no real leadership background, and was "deceptive" about her true beliefs.

Who was helping to run Burner's campaign when that advertisement helped sink Burner's chances? Local political consultant—and former Stranger writer—Sandeep Kaushik.

Fast forward one year.

In the race for King County Executive, the campaign of County Councilman Dow Constantine says that his opponent, Susan Hutchisan, is too partisan and inexperience for the job. According to Constantine's campaign, Hutchison is someone who has no political pedigree, possesses no real leadership background, and is deceptive about her true beliefs.

And who is helping to run Constantine's campaign against Hutchison? Local political consultant—and former Stranger writer—Sandeep Kaushik.

With Constantine currently running behind Hutchison in the polls and facing a tough negative ad blitz by Hutchison's supporters, would Kaushik ever run a "Job Interview"-style ad against Hutchison? After all, it would be pretty easy to update and re-purpose the concept for this race.

Kaushik told me he feels "pretty good" about the way Constantine's campaign is going at the moment, and declined to discuss advertising strategy going forward.

Here's the ad that Constantine's campaign is currently running:

Attack Susan on the Sympohny deficit she left in place, after taking taxpayer money, we can't afford it if she does to the county what she did to the symphony; the article in the Times points out she did nothing to control expenditures.

"Lack of experience" is too generic and not focused when you can point to FAILURE as her experience.
