The Zizek

Posted by on Fri, Oct 16, 2009 at 2:20 PM

Vintage Zizek:

...[W]hen I saw The Matrix at a local theatre in Slovenia, I had the unique opportunity of sitting close to the ideal spectator of the film-namely, an idiot. A man in his late 20's to my right was so immersed in the film that he disturbed other spectators all the time with loud exclamations, like "My God, wow, so there is no reality! So we are all puppets!"

Philosophy without laughter is the weakest philosophy.

What a bunch of abstruse nonsense. What aspect of Marxist philosophy forbids clear, cogent prose?

I just wrote and deleted 172 snarky comments about Charles' tendency to reduce most human experience and suffering into shallow Philosophy 101 snippets. Okay, we'll go with this one.

Not that he's doing that here, mind you...just that I don't think his well necessarily runs any deeper than the Matrix's. People in glass houses and all that-there.

oh yeah, the matrix...humans used as batteries. sure, that made a lot of sense. computer overlords: "hey, let's farm humans--instead of say, cows--for energy, 'cause unlike cows, they are capable of having existential crises, waking up from our induced delusions and making war upon us."

@5, it works much better if you interpret "energy" as "processing power." Brains are good little gristle-computers.

Dear Charles,
I like your posts and I've been waiting a long time for a Zizek reference. Even though you're often more obtuse than is necessary, I like that. It opens our minds to many thought threads and puzzles.

What was awesome about The Matrix was that suddenly everybody was talking about the nature of reality and dreams, machine development, that sort of thing. It was like somebody had opened a window into the room full of things smart people talk about, and suddenly everybody wanted to come inside and poke around.
