The Perils of Selective Reading

Yesterday, Sullivan posted a deeply depressing video of gay-bashing in New York. In a TV interview, one of the suspects' friends showed off his anti-gay Leviticus tattoo. Too bad he didn't keep reading—he could've gotten an anti-tattoo Leviticus tattoo:

Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.
Leviticus 19:28

As a pastor wrote to Sullivan:

Of course since when is the Bible applied to oneself. It is apparently only to be applied to others, as an excuse for abuse.

(Rev. Buddy, our resident Biblical literalist/advice columnist, wouldn't have put up with that shit.)

It's so weird to be so against something that has absolutely nothing to do with you. Oh... wait...

I think many people are too quick to reach for the "methinks the lady doth protest too much" cliché, but in this case it's completely appropriate, a textbook example of reaction formation. Gayest tattoo ever.

Leviticus 20:9 If anyone curses his father or mother, he must be put to death.

Deuteronomy 22:20-1 If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the girl’s virginity can be found, she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done a disgraceful thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house.

This seems clear enough to me? Why are Christians not stoning more people? You either follow the old testament or you don't. I understand how a rational and reasonable Christian can reject the old testament (as the teaching of Jesus require them to do) but you cannot pick and choose passages as you like.

Sure you can. I do it all the time. In fact, I've put together a version of Genesis that strongly implies that only veganism is an acceptable lifestyle.

I'm not even vegan, just amused at how often in Genesis, God mentions that animals are for sacrifice, but only mentions that green things are for eating.

I prefer to bludgeon people with the bible (soft bound). It doesn't leave marks that can later be used as evidence against you. You can also use the pages as rolling papers. The bible is very versitile!

I suppose if you have any inclination to believe that biblical horseshit you should probably have indelible reminders nearby, so you don't forget in the heat of the moment.

The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose. Indeed.

And as usual, LC is nowhere to be found on this thread where anti-gay violence is being discussed. Because it's only violence if someone is verbally hassling an anti-gay marriage proponent.

That bible passage actually seems to permit same-sex sex. It only says that when you are doing it with someone of the same sex, don't do it like you would when you are having opposite-sex sex. That would be an abomination.

I have no tattoos, but if I were to get one, it would have to be Leviticus 19:28. That's really great.

@ 12, Me too, and that's after reading it in Hebrew. It's about a man acting passive, like a woman, in a patriarchal society.

He probably doesn't lie down with a man as with a woman. Standing up in a small video booth or leaning against a piling down at the piers, that's nothing like with a woman...

In his mind, at least.
