Who Wants to Approve R-71?

Posted by on Thu, Oct 15, 2009 at 3:25 PM

A statement just released by Washington Families Standing Together lists 31 organizations representing communities of color that have endorsed voting to approve Referendum 71. “There isn’t just one type of family in our communities. We are a diverse community, with diverse families," Estela Ortega, Executive Director of El Centro de la Raza said in a statement. "They all deserve legal protections and to be treated fairly under the law especially during these times of economic uncertainty."

But upholding the domestic-partnership bill isn't all about love for the gays. “This new law also protects elders in our community who are in monogamous opposite-sex relationships but choose not to marry," said James Kelly, President of the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle. "Our elders are the rock of our community. We must do all that we can to protect them."

The full list of organizations appears after the jump.

You blew the lead, Dom.
Let's see if we can fix it:
not- "Communities of color want to uphold the domestic partnership bill."

That isn't what the story says at all...

This is better-
"The Liberal Democratic Party shills who run 31 organizations claiming to represent minorities have endorsed voting to approve Referendum 71, according to a statement just released by Washington Families Standing Together."

asks you to forward this to Mister Savage, who still hasn't published a single post here or story in The Stranger interviewing local queers of color about how they felt about the charge that it was the minority vote that caused Proposition 8 to pass in California.

I read somewhere about how the large Vietnamese population in California were one of the only minority groups to vote against Prop 8. A group that is pretty conservative and Republican. Not sure if it is because many are not Christian or what.

@ 4 ) I changed the opening sentence right after I put up the post, inserting the "upholding the domestic-partnerships" phrase into the first line of the second paragraph. It seemed to flow better.

To me, the term "_____ of color" is slightly offensive, but since I know you know better and don't mean harm, I don't feel offended. It's basically saying colored people, which has negative connotations.

However, this is encouraging news.

@9: Indeed, I paid plenty of attention--did I blink and miss the post or published interview where Savage interviewed LOCAL GAY MEN AND LESBIANS OF COLOR about the Prop 8 issue and the issue of marriage equality in their community FROM THEIR POINT OF VIEW. Sure he covered it from every other angle, but...

If you have links to these interviews, please provide.

The Stranger has a long history of pretending to be more progressive and more left wing than they actually. They are the HRC of Seattle alternative media: kicking queers in the teeth the moment they dare step outside the acceptable boundaries of political discourse and action, the moment we check Savage on his racism, the moment we check any of your white queer writers on their elitism.

Remember this: The Village Voice was considered the liberal, progressive voice in Greenwich Village and when they continued to attack and insult the burgeoning queer rights movement following the Stonewall Riots, queers turned their attention to the Voice and protested and boycotted and organized to force the Voice to change its stand on lgbt people. If the Stranger doesn't get its act together, Seattle's lgbt community will force you to represent us and our movement accurately and fairly.

@7 "People of color" is not racist or offensive in this context. POC and WOC are inclusive terms commonly used to refer to non white minorities.

@5 Seven out of of 31 groups are law associations. I wouldn't say that is a majority.
