"Six Murderous Beliefs"

Posted by on Wed, Oct 14, 2009 at 2:37 PM

I mentioned this instructional film in yesterday's post devoted to Shallow Grave at the Central Cinema, where it's the curtain-raising attraction.

But it's also in the public domain, so I'm going to showcase it here, too, because I can't stop thinking about it. It's so...long, and weird, and unclear, and it features the most amazing lesson about going swimming too soon after eating a hot dog you'll ever see.

Thanks to Slog commenter G.

Fun in a completely different way than the film above, but worth checking out for footage of the '62 World's Fair and new monorail (and the batshit-insane teen hosts):

The Amazing Jim 3
The best part of the video was when the girl almost died from drowning after eating a hot dog and the narrator tells us to "trust in science" when there is no scientific evidence in the old wives tale of 'wait 30 minutes to swim after eating'. It based on the false assumption that eating would cause blood to rush to your stomach from your muscles causing them to cramp.

I'd forgotten about that!

It's interesting that they were demonstrating call waiting, 3-way calling, auto-dialing, pagers, etc. at the '62 fair. Giant, steam-powered pagers, but still...

Just wait until you see the "Surviving Hostage Situations" instructional film from the 60s that we'll be pulling out in a few months (made for upper management members of multi-national corporations).
