Making a Difference in People's Lives, One Art-Rape at a Time

Posted by on Wed, Oct 14, 2009 at 2:11 PM

This is dumb for a hundred thousand reasons, chief among them that if you crawl down a tunnel called Rape Tunnel whose stated purpose is to rape you (the artist is waiting there to rape you), then you are not being raped.

Furthermore, "impactful" is a puny goal and a terrible word. Do I smell satire? Did this artist really punch a fashion model in the face and break her nose?

I used all the energy I had for this to pose those questions. I'm not answering them.

At least G.G. Allin made a handful of good songs, and had the decency to die.

This will probably end with someone taking him on as a challenger.

the rape tunnel is only one choice, there is also the defilement viaduct replacement and the spoliation surface option.

Whoops... Somehow, this is even lamer as a hoax.

Less "commenting on the state of art", and more art, please.

a Columbus-based artist who made his mark on the Ohio scene by showing at the William Strunk Jr. Museum of Contemporary Art in Akron and internationally regarded galleries such as Alexandria Asheton Gallery and Seward Projects Space.

That passage had so many laugh-inducing concepts that I completely lost bowel control.

Its a hoax, but this line is brilliant: "The point of this long aside is that all this took place two years ago, and I’m still having an impact on this young lady’s life, something not many other artists could claim about their work."

Would it not still be rape, if after entering the tunnel you then did not consent to sex with the artist? I think so. Otherwise, totally spot on.

This was revealed as a hoax (satire, whatever you want to call it) last month! A quick Google would have saved you some embarrassment.

This kind of gives it away right here:

"Rape seemed like the next logical step."

In the comments thread on the story itself, I cracked up at this comment, which I'm only 90% sure was in on the joke:

"As a side note, I think it’s unfortunate that people are so willing to prejudge a work without experiencing it firsthand."

Which is to say: Try getting raped! You might like it!

Yes, this was exposed as a hoax. Probably the protests are also engineered. The hoax itself is the art, I suppose.

That being said, re @12 et al, I can't help but think that if the exhibit were real, there would be people who would willingly go into it with full expectation of being "raped". And the makeup of that set of people would perhaps be equally as interesting.
