"How do you feel about your tax dollars being spent to fund black fags taking pictures of other black fags in New York?"

Posted by on Wed, Oct 14, 2009 at 11:31 AM

A high-school teacher in a suburban school outside Chicago said that to a class full of students—a class that included one openly-gay student, Jordan Hunter, who filed a complaint with the school board. The teacher, Dave Burk, got off with a slap on the wrist.

How do I feel? About how I feel about my tax dollars being used by white racists getting pics of other white racists .... I mean, it depends on what it's for - and why you're objecting. If you're one of those anti-tax people, nothing we say will help. If you're one of those racists, nothing we say will help.

If you're unhappy cause you can't find your own black guy ... well, hey, that's how life is.

Do high school students really pay that much in taxes?

Like, surely they're mainly paying sales tax, which is local, and wouldn't be used to fund putative New York homosexuals.

Per the article, the school board gave him the harshest treatment they are allowed, probably due to the teachers' union. Does it feel adequate? No. And the teacher not even showing up to the hearing, and his comments (through his lawyer) about this being a learning lesson blah blah blah are aggravating. But I think it's important to note that the school board did what they were allowed to do - plus in their message they are saying that if there's another incident, they can take further action. Hopefully future students will be as forthright as Jordan Hunter should another incident arise so that the board will be able to get rid of Burk if he pulls this kind of stunt again.

Kudos to Hunter for making it clear to Burk that this kind of BS won't be tolerated, even if the result isn't immediately satisfying.

Oh, and the comments on the original Chronicle story are skary.

I'm personally totally fine for my tax dollars to fund black "fags" (as you say) taking photos of other-- etc etc.

It's a far better use of my money than, say, starting and maintaining an illegal war in Iraq, or building more roads, or "fighting" a Drug "War" instead of treating drugs as a medical issue.

I think this teacher is obliquely referencing Mapplethorpe and the NEA. Oy, he's been dead for 20 years, NEA has been neutered for almost as long, and Mapplethorpe wasn't even black. Somehow that teacher was able to make that statement extra racist and homophobic as well as factually incorrect and completely irrelevant to any real world issue.

I'd rather my taxes go toward black fags doing pretty much anything than go toward this douche's salary.

Before I read the comments from the link, I was already going to say that Jordan needs to get a thicker skin and that the real world is going to be tougher. He wants protection by his school and community because he was offended as a gay student - fuck, we barely have rights and have to vote on them in this state. The fight for protection and rights is tough, too.

Jordan, young Jordan, needs to calm down and do something constructive like write an essay or go on a date with a boy. Yeah, the teacher is an idiot, but we all have had idiot teachers or professors at some point. Jordan's little feewings were hurt, aww. Maybe his mama can make him some hot chocolate and cinnamon toast to make him feel better.

@9: The real world is going to be tougher because of all the assholes who were taught in school by asshole teachers that this kind of assholery is okay.

#9: It's the teacher who isn't ready for the "real world". The kid learned EXACTLY how to deal with real world problems by being a grownup and taking the issue to the appopriate place.

Idiot teachers should be fired, and kudos to Hunter for trying to get a shitbag teacher fired.

@9, yes, let's just continue to let homophobia and racism run rampant in schools, in fact let's encourage it! You have no brains. The kid did the right thing. That kind of hatespeak is not acceptable, especially in the classroom.

black is a factually descriptive term and fag is one of Dan's favorite words.

@14 "black" is a factually descriptive word? To describe people? Have you ever actually seen a person who is black? I mean, I once dated a dude with an arm that was tattoo'd black, but that's the closest I can think of, and even then it was sort of...green...

"Black" is about as factually descriptive of people as "white" is. (I'd like to give myself the benefit of the doubt and describe myself as a 'light tan' or even 'peach,' but I'm no fresh sheet of paper, son.)

@15 I once had an art teacher hold up sheets of white and black construction paper next to students' faces to make that same point. This was in kindergarten or first grade.

Let's spell it out for the morons:
Black is a factually descriptive term used in this country to describe people of the Negro race.

Actually, Dan, he said that shit in THREE of his classes in a row.

A slap on the wrist for a well planned out racist/homophobic fiesta!!

I WISH Jordan had been black, then it would have gotten the attention and punishment it deserved.

@9 - What Jordan did by complaining IS the fight for rights and protection, you complete and utter incomparable moron.

Furthering the scolding at 9: How is writing an essay or going on a date more constructive than holding this teacher directly accountable for his homophobic bullshit? Luckily this Hunter kid seems to have more of a spine than certain doormats in the gay community.

Also, I don't think that anyone needs to provoke this teacher into making more comments to get himself fired. If the guy was stupid enough to give a "lesson" about how art endowment is a waste of taxpayer money on black fags in new york, chances are that he just can't help himself, warning or no warning. Hopefully he'll be out of that school in a couple years.

#9- Yes, the real world may in fact be more harsh. But he was not in the "real world", he is in school! School is where we have educated and hopefully moral people teaching and acting as a model for our young minds to develop under. It has nothing to do with his "feelings" being hurt. It has to do with hate and it being incited by this teacher to his detriment and to the detriment of all students who fall under his racist and homophobic tutelage. Why should this man be entrusted our children to mold if this is how he enacts his powers of instruction under that trust? Terrible, and he should have received far worse than he did.
