A poem that rhymes and stings, from The Nation.

OMG that this comes from Trillin is so perfect. He's the inverse of Polanski in every way I can imagine, except perhaps insofar as they're both celebrities who've lost their wives. Classic.

Cute. Very tongue-in-cheek.

Yeah, he was crazy about Alice. I miss his books about their gastronomic exploits.

I loved Calvin Trillin before and now I love him as much as it's possible to love someone I don't know in person. He has nailed it with this verse!

Calvin!! I love you!!!!

Absolutely perfect.

if only he'd worked "rape rape" into the poem, it would be perfect.

Wonderful poem! I have not heard anything from Jack Nicholson about Polanski's current situation. Does anyone here know if he's come out either way? Best wishes to all.

I agree. Justice should always be served.

Now tell me why Bill Ayers the terrorist is running free?

A Poem About Bill Ayers:

You threw a bomb into a crowd
It went off so very loud

It hurt my Dad's ears and his legs
They blew up all over the place

But now you're a friend to Kings and Queens
Your ideas are featured in magazines

You hold the President's ear
And it's you that I must fear.

Because I'm not a Son of Con Ed fame
Just a guy who thinks

You
Should
Be
Ashamed...

#8: A quick Google search and wikipedia reading makes me wonder. Your dad was a fellow terrorist with him? Of all the things Ayers was charged with, murder is not one of them, although members of his group did die occasional while building bombs. He seemed to plan his bombs not to injure life, only property. But, at least according to interviews, he is ashamed, so there's that.

#7: The same search answered your question. The FBI performed wildly illegal things while gathering evidence, and the state was forced to drop charges because of it. He is not running around with an outstanding warrant, as Polanski was.

Stay on topic, troll.

I'd like to see what Polanski's defenders have to say...

#5 Did we ever get a definition of "rape rape" anyway? I'm assuming it means the attacker stuffs the panties in her mouth but I'm up for other interpretations.

@7: Because he was in hiding until the statutes of limitations on the charges against him came into effect. If Polanski had fled *before* he was found guilty (by plea), it's likely that he would have gotten off in the same way. But he didn't, so he's in custody.

Something creepy: it echoes the meter and structure of Shel Silverstein.

For those of you whose screenreaders rendered this poem as "Picture_2.png", here's the text:

A youthful error? Yes, perhaps.
But he's been punished for this lapse--
For decades exiled from LA
He knows, as he wakes up each day,
He'll miss the movers and the shakers.
He'll never get to see the Lakers.
For just one old and small mischance,
He has to live in Paris, France.
He's suffered slurs and other stuff.
Has he not suffered quite enough?
How can these people get so riled?
He only raped a single child.

Why make him into some Darth Vader
For sodomizing one eighth grader?
This man is brilliant, that's for sure--
Authentically, a film auteur.
He gets awards that are his due.
He knows important people, too--
Important people just like us.
And we know how to make a fuss.
Celebrities would just be fools
To play by little people's rules.
So Roman's banner we unfurl.
He only raped one little girl.

Run away!

It's the Night of the 70s post-New York Magazine Intellectual Zombies.

Up next...a reanimated Normal Mailer bites off the head of Andy Warhol!

Part of Polanski's sentence when he convicted should be to read this poem aloud in open court.
