Retail Into the Bladeless Future

Available for sale in the US and Australia starting today: Dyson's bladeless electric fan.

Take it away, Financial Times:

The Dyson Air Multiplier fan uses advancements in airflow engineering instead of traditional blades to ‘multiply’ air 15 times and push out 119 gallons of smooth and uninterrupted air every second. As a result, Dyson claims the bladeless fan, which works by forcing a jet of air out of a narrow circular slit and then over an aerofoil-shaped blade, is at least as efficient as its bladed counterpart, more comfortable and much safer.....The Dyson Air Multiplier will be available in two sizes, a 10-inch model costing $300 and a 12-inch model costing $330.

Having recently experienced the elegant effectiveness of the Dyson Airblade hand dryer, I look forward to sometime being in the same room with a Dyson Air Multiplier fan. (It MULTIPLIES AIR!)

But if futuristic doo-dads aren't your thing, maybe I can interest you in some auctioned wads of dead celebrity hair?

Any day now Dyson can expect a lawsuit from Oprah claiming trademark infringement.

It's got a motor. What is the motor turning if not a blade? It seems the blade is just in the base. I could be wrong, but I strongly suspect bullshit.

at $300 for a house fan, it should double as a vaporizer.

I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure that an "aerofoil-shaped blade" qualifies as a blade, since it's in the goddamn name.

Bad naming convention aside...sounds cool (no pun intended).

whoops, motor may have blades, just not the fan assembly.

Dang, based on the headline I was hoping this had something to do with shaving.

I mean, nowadays we've got triple-tracks (an idea once thought so ludicrous it was the subject of "Saturday Night Live"'s very first commercial parody), quad-tracks, even five-bladed razors, so the idea of someone going completely in the other direction by developing a blade-less razor had me excited for a moment.

Tried the airblade hand dryer for the first time yesterday at the Convention Center - impressive, but putting my hands down in there caused me to flash on those schlocky horror movies that come out this time of year: Maybe real blades will chop my hands off!

Dyson is to appliances what Apple is to computers. I freaking LOVE Dyson and I was very intrigued by their intentionally vague emailing telling me that they had a new product they were unveiling. My Dyson vacuum is the best I've ever had, and the Dyson airblade is my favorite kind of hand dryer. I can't wait to actually see this thing in real life!
