I know it looks dangerous, but you needn't worry--you can't really tell from the picture but the ground around the jungle-jim is covered with broken glass to cushion the falls.

We had a perfectly good playground. It was a field leveled off--they tore down some houses, and we called it our playground. And there was broken glass, and rocks and bricks on it. But we never lost one kid. Not one kid died. Not one broken arm, broken leg, broken anything. Maybe a little gash, here and there. That's all right.

And then, the grownups moved in the monkey bars. The monkey bars came in. We lost 124 kids in one day.

Now that's a magnificent piece of interactive public art!

The joy of our youth was lubricated with the blood of the fallen.

remember back in the day when we believed in thinning the herd and survival of the fittest? the glory days of no helmets, pads, and soft landings. want to know why we end up with so many stupid people now? child-proofing and helmets.

@3 grew up in the same neighborhood in Philadelphia as Bill Cosby!

"If you ask a kid what he wants not one will say 'I want something where you go around in circles for five minutes and then puke!'"

@6,

By your logic, third world countries (which have no safety measures for anyone, let alone children) should be full of geniuses. Let me give you a hint here: they're not.

@7: Not one kid asked for that!

I'm a Seattleite, but I have a CD copy of "Wonderfulness" at hand. :D

@ 8,

They're smarter and more resourceful and hard-working than what we're breeding here. I'm pretty sure their parents aren't convinced they're special snowflakes and deserving of constant butt-smooching and protection.
