Politics Bar Crawl to Approve Referendum 71 This Weekend

Campaign volunteers hope to be out in force tomorrow at every one of Seattle's gay bars (they'll hit some of the bigger bars Sunday as well). The goal? Get more gay and lesbian voters to actually vote to approve Referendum 71.
Volunteers are getting together at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Cafe Metropolitain before heading out to the bars. They'll also meet there tonight at 7:30.

@ 1 - "preaching to the choir" is exactly what's necessary right now.
Ballots have already started going out.
It's way too late to change the minds of people who are not on our side already. What's needed now is for everyone who agrees with equal rights to actually vote!

Seattle LGBT Equality Weekend October 10 – 11, 2009
Seattle OUTProtest has brought together a grassroots coalition of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and straight people and organizations to organize a series of solidarity events to coincide with the National March for Equality this October.
March and Rally
Forty years after the Stonewall Rebellion, we march in solidarity with our brothers and sisters and allies in Washington, DC to demand equal protection in all matters governed by civil law in all 50 states and to show our public support for the Approval of Referendum 71 here in Washington state.

Thinking Queerly: Community Workshops on LGBT Issues
Community organizers and activists will present a series of workshops on a range of issues affecting the lgbt community including Stonewall and lgbt movement history, homelessness, hate crimes and self defense, lgbt health, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, lgbt legal issues, Gay-Straight Alliances, marriage equality, and more.

HIV/AIDS Vigil
As the AIDS pandemic nears its fourth decade, we gather to educate and raise awareness about the continued struggles of people living with HIV/AIDS and their families, friends, and support networks as well as to demand all resources and all funding necessary for prevention, treatment, and a cure.

Seattle Central Community College South Plaza, Broadway & E Pine
Generation Q Mega Mixer
Come mingle and mix with seasoned leaders and activists of the GLBTQ community at the Generation Q Mega Mixer. Young leaders (25 and under please) will have the opportunity to socialize, learn from, and quite possibly have a dance off with some of the community's most inspiring members in a relaxed social environment.

Ballots this week are arriving in the U Dist - so the effort is TO GET OUT VOTE - and if by chance, persuade, OK too.
Some silly advice is to not bother to get your base to vote. THAT is always a campaign goal in the closing weeks of a ballot effort - and Approve Ref: 71 - it is at that point.
So - kids - SEND THAT BALLOT BACK BY MAIL - DON'T FORGET - REMIND FRIENDS - CARRY SOME STAMPS - SEND A REMINDER TO YOUR LIST

The "preaching to the choir" comments indicate a lack of awareness of what the Bar Crawl is even about. Energizing the base and getting out the vote (yes, you can STILL register to vote or change your address in person at the County Elections office where you reside) - those are only part of the effort. Another goal is to sign up more volunteers to work the phone banks and to do the door to door canvassing that will be needed to move beyond "the choir". And if you don't think the other side is preaching (literally) to their choir, then you truly don't know much. But I suppose it is much more amusing to deride the efforts of others than actually come to a meeting and suggest another approach. Off year elections in which one has only 4 weeks to get one's point across are all about voter turnout and whose side turns out the most. But if one is too busy posting snide, bitter and jaded little couplets on the Stranger SLOG that doesn't leave much time for actually sutdying the issue and figuring these things out.

Is the bar crawl organized by Washington Families Standing Together? Seems like too good of an idea to have come from them- the first "bar outreach" they did was to get volunteers. GREAT IDEA- let's get drunk kids to sign up to volunteer, so in the morning when they sober up, they won't even remember signing up to volunteer.

Go buy a book of stamps.
Every time you run into a friend, offer to buy them a beer or whatever if they bring their ballot. Then give them a stamp and walk with them to the polling place (mailbox or neighborhood center).

@ think about what you are saying - go for it! go out and get as many straight approve voters as you can. I love how people love to sit back and criticize how things are organized or events that are planned or what is not being done while they do nothing themselves. If you don't like how things are done then go to a meeting and suggest something else or take it upon yourself to organize something you think will help. This is a grassroots level event made up of volunteers.
