Living Under Sharia

Posted by on Thu, Oct 8, 2009 at 10:16 AM

A Saudi court on Wednesday sentenced a man who caused uproar by bragging about his sex life on television to five years in prison and 1,000 lashes, according to Ministry of Information officials.
Mazen Abdul Jawad talked openly about his sex life on the controversial show.

Mazen Abdul Jawad, a 32-year-old airline employee and divorced father of four, spoke openly about his sexual escapades, his love of sex and losing his virginity at age 14. He made the comments on Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation, which aired the interview a few months ago.

Saudi authorities shut down LBC offices in Jeddah and Riyadh after airing the interview on an episode of its popular show "A Thick Red Line." Abdul Jawad was arrested shortly after the program aired and charged with violating Saudi Arabia's crime of publicizing vice.

I wonder what they would do to the Stranger.

I think we know what they would do to the Stranger, and every one who has ever written for it, read it, or posted to the comments. All I can say is God bless America!

You could set up a column - "Ask Sharia" or somesuch. Have readers as questions and see where they fall under Islamic Law.

Nowhere will you see hypocrisy enshrined into law more dramatically than in Saudi Arabia. If you think a Senator preaching Family Values in public while banging man-whores in private is the height of hypocrisy, consider for a moment the well-known conduct of the obscenely rich ruling families of Saudi Arabia. A tiny upper crust of royalty with the money and power to do anything they want ruling over a country where people are publicly flogged for admitting they have sex. This is what theocracy looks like.

I think even the most bat-shit crazy fundamentalist right-winger in this country wouldn't last five minutes in a place like that.

Fuck the Islamophobia. I don't hear the Stranger attacking all of Christianity because a few Christian bigots are putting a referendum on the ballot to take away rights from lgbt people.

@5 What rock have you been living under? The Stranger relentlessly attacks Christianity at every opportunity. If a group of Muslim bigots was leading the charge to strip gays and lesbians of their rights in Washington State, you can be damn sure the Stranger would be relentlessly attacking Islam as well.

I am shocked - shocked, I say - that the same country that attacked the US on 9-11 would continue to be radical in such a way.

Oh, wait, no, I'm not.

A THOUSAND lashes??? Holy fuck! How can a person survive that? They may as well skin him alive, for God's sake. This is cruel medievalism, at its finest (and unkindest).

@5 Sharia law is an unqualified menace to humanity. It's like having Leviticus imposed as the law of the land and if we didn't fight tooth and nail against equally violent misanthropes masquerading as worshippers of the god of love in this country, we'd see the same bullshit here. This is not Islamophobia, this is fear of sick motherfuckers with guns, whips, and priests who have managed to code their nightmarish slasher fantasies into law. We have no obligation to give that any respect whatever, and in fact have an obligation to oppose it whenever and wherever possible. Respect for other cultures can only go so far.

Yes indeed, thank goodness we don't live under religious rule. Those fuckers (religions) have started more wars and killed more people in human history than all little leftist guerilla movements put together.

Oh, and @5? Please do try to pay better attention.

@9,

Following up on what #12 said. They administer a small portion of the lashes at a time, wait for the victim to heal, and then repeat. So, in addition to the corporal punishment, the victim will spend quite a lot of time in prison waiting for the entire punishment to be meted out.

I mean, is there really anything more to say about this?
