Not Good Enough

Posted by on Wed, Oct 7, 2009 at 4:39 PM

Barack Obama is going to name a gay man as ambassador—to New Zealand. Bill Clinton appointed a gay man as ambassador to Luxembourg. George W. Bush—George W. Bush—named a gay man as ambassador to Romania.

Obama isn't breaking new ground here. If this is what he's planning to announce at the HRC dinner—if this is why he's going to speak before a gay-rights group on the eve of the National March for Equality—he should be booed off the stage.

UPDATE: Okay, this would be worth cheering.

I highly doubt this is going to be announced as a big deal.

And won't those Mormons that control Samoa just love having a Gay man as ambassador!

It'll be a big deal if it's a gay nigger. I mean homosexual nigger. Or nigger homosexual. I don't know. How do I say it? I'm just so totally racist.

Yes, Dan, you see Obama can't sign a bill for gay rights (or anything else) until it gets passed by BOTH houses of Congress. Bicameral legislative system. "I'm just a bill, yes I'm only a bill"--remember that?

Which is maybe--just maybe--we should spend at least as much time and energy lobbying the CONGRESS for ENDA and against DADT and DOMA as we do picking apart the few EXECUTIVE powers that our Constitution actually DOES imbue Obama (or any president) with--including the selection of Ambassadors.

La la la. Obama can suspend enforcement of DADT right now, with a stroke of his pen.

Blatant lie at # 11. In these times of war on two fronts there has to be a consensus with the general in all that pertains to the military, just look at the current brouhaha and pressure from them in terms of troop increment. The President needs to keep out of this sort of trivial issues, the more distance the less unnecessary headaches. He just doesn't need this now.

Dan, which is more important to gay people, the appointment of a gay ambassador or universal health care?

Dan who never served has no clue how the military works.

DADT will fall in the Obama first term, and, not because of braying noise from impatient activists. Euro command, big brass, is often openly gay. The insult of the American policy is making them very angry

British high command is loaded with flaming queens, tired at the silly American policy which insults their competence and skills.

Trust me Dan, it is on the way out. But, you can't set the time line.

Loveschild @12, Blatant lie? It's not that Dan is misinformed, it's not that he's oversimplifying but intentionally trying to deceive us?

Please, Loveschild, tell the class the exact process the President of the United States would have to go to, to invoke, revise or suspend an executive order. Please be explicit about how the general in the field can intercept this process and usurp the president's power by denying him consensus.

And then, please, follow up by explaining to us confused ones what Dan would hope to gain by deceiving us into believing the president has this power.

I do look forward to learning what you have to teach us.

And, I hope you can exercise restraint in the future before accusing others of lying.

Frankly...God Frankly... when are you going to accept the fact that sexual orientation is IRRELEVANT to to the professional achievement of a person. Here in Greece, our national education minister is gay as daisies in May, Frederic Mitterrand is the minister of culture and in his autobiography writes that he used rent boys, the prime minister of Iceland is Lesbian...there are a lot of gay ambassadors, gay chief of staffs etc...Everybody in those difficult circumstances are doing their best IRRESPECTIVE of their sexual orientation... Grow Up ... and frankly I wonder what makes you so different of Iran !!!!!!!!.

This kind of pandering to the homosexuals (by a homosexual himself) is why Barry Soetoro (aka Barack Hussein Obama...mmm mmm mmm) is in the trouble that he is.

This beta male has been trying to ram socialism and fascism down the throat of decent hard working Americans who don't want it. And he will be rebuked. His epic fail at trying to ram the thoroughly unwanted Olympics down the throat of Chicagoans so his corrupt cronies (Valerie Jarret, Tony Rezko, Rhambo, etc) could get a little payback only to be voted out on the FIRST BALLOT (LOVE THAT) is symblematic of what will happen to him and the Democrat Party when hard traditionalists sweep them out of power next year.

Americans do not want their medicine socialized, and they do not want their children converted to homosexuality.

Allegedly @22, I take your hatred of Europe is not unlike commonplace homophobia, in which there's no rationality behind it?

Germany has a better healthcare system than we do, by far, and only costs a fifth as much (if not less, since our prices continue to get grossly inflated). I'd much rather have their healthcare.

Denmark has the freest speech in the world to the point that holocaust denial films or other pro-nazi propaganda is shown there, for want of its ability to be shown anywhere else. Not that I have a thing for Nazis, but those topics for which I do are tame by comparison. I'd at least like to be able to pick up And Tango Makes Three or the Harry Potter series without some religious extremists taking offense.

Sweden has (last I checked) the lowest rates of STDs and unwanted pregnancies amongst teenagers and young adults. Maybe we should base our sex education system on what they're doing.

The UK is so cool under terrorist attack that they've mostly gotten bored trying to bomb over there. This may be due to having been desensitized by the Blitz. Still, if we were able to return to business as quickly as they do after calamity, we could save some bucks on the war on terror.

Oh, and euro-kids, even the trashy ones, far, far better educated than our home-grown boys and girls, despite whether they're educated at home or in public or parochial schools. Heck, they may actually know the differences between natural selection, abiogenesis and cosmology.

@31 Thank you for your answer. Europe might not be a heaven for all gays ( Rumania, Bulgaria, ... come to mind), or a heaven but we came a long way when our great-great-grand parents moved to the USA to protect their own civil, religious and other liberties or launch devastating wars so @22 your point is completely moot. I prefer to be a gay with no right in Greece than a christian straight abstinence educated in the USA and pun is intended. Sex is not a sin...get over it
