As It Turned Out, The Universe Did Not Care

Posted by on Tue, Oct 6, 2009 at 2:25 PM

A great post over at Reflections of a Newsosaur today about the delusion that led some journalists who'd lost their jobs when Denver's Rocky Mountain News closed to think they could just launch a start-up, keep doing their jobs, and make a living that way.

The start-up news sites failed for fundamentally the same reasons the Rocky did. People felt the universe would reward them for doing what they wanted to do, instead of doing what they needed to do to earn the patronage of readers and advertisers.

Sorry, folks, it doesn’t work that way.

Which reminded me that I haven't had reason to click over to the Seattle Post Globe in a long, long time. Which can't be a good sign.

SPG reminds me of when me and some kids from my high school started a new high school paper. We were talented, underappreciated, bored and total geeks. Our faculty support was the closeted alcoholic art instructor. Sadness abounds.

Can't see why it matters, since the Seattle PI is doing fine online.

The universe did, however, support my online poker career. Thanks, universe!

@2: Doubt you'll find numbers to back that up. They're being propped up by Hearst, but Hearst has already shown that it will pull the plug in a heartbeat if it loses too much money.

As it has been all along, the problem isn't readership; it's the lack of advertising revenue. Look at the paltry number of ads on the P-I site and tell us how they're not losing money.

Next thing you know you'll be whining that the owner of Fox wants to charge for people to read his papers online in the UK ... nothing ever satisfies you whiners, does it?

FWIW, I don't know WTF Crosscut's doing either. Seems like they're just a link blog.
