One More Chance to Promote Your Favorite Charity for Strangercrombie

Posted by on Mon, Oct 5, 2009 at 11:53 AM

SC.jpg
On Friday, I asked Sloggers to promote their favorite Seattle-area charity for Strangercrombie, our annual charity auction.

We got a whole bunch of great ideas, but I'd like you Monday-morning Sloggers to get involved, too. Do you want to second any of the great suggestions from Friday? Did nobody nominate your favorite charity? This comment thread is your last chance to push your nominee. We'll be having a vote on Wednesday.

Pago Pago Penguin Preservation Fund.

Because penguins will need a place to stay after Antarctica melts.

Ahhh, the best Strangercrombie model ever. That bewitching slight venereal srabismus. Hummina hummina. More like him this year, pretty please?

@2,

Gotta disagree with you there. His counterpart in that issue was way hotter in my opinion.

More like him, please.

I concur with @3 and esp. @4.

And doesn't that guy work at Pagliacci?

@5, we must agree to disagree. I'll always prefer a cross-eyed fella.

King County Coalition Against Domestic Violence

The budget cuts are hitting the domestic violence agencies hard. It is important to remember that this is a community issue, not just a women's issue. Women, men and children are being hurt every day, being denied healthcare (because being a victim is a "pre-existing condition"), losing their jobs and being made homeless, and being turned away from shelters in huge numbers (roughly 13-1).

Plus, October is domestic violence awareness month, so show some love!

Can you vote to support a type of cause & select the specific group after some research? I'd like to see the proceeds support homeless services and/or emergency shelter.

Why not do a little digging & see who needs money vs. who is almost shutting down? Who has the lowest overhead?

That would be Medicare and Medicaid, MJ.

The Youth Suicide Prevention Program-they do great work in general, but also have a kick ass GLBTQ youth program focusing on increasing support for GLBTQ youth in order to decrease their risk.

The Youth Suicide Prevention Program. This organization works with schools, parents and adolescents to understand the warning signs for suicide risk. Their OUTloud GLBTQ program is great!

Cannabis Defense Coalition

Mission: Cannabis Defense Coalition is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, membership organization devoted to reducing the harms associated with drug use. We advocate sensible, science-based drug policy, and for the health, safety and civil liberties of individuals and communities affected by drugs.

You can even get community service credit for volunteering with this organization, you know, if you are forced into community service for violating our archaic & destructive prohibition laws.

Lots of good orgs listed here, but I think Solid Ground and New Futures rise above the rest in terms of community impact.

But I have to also agree @9. DV and sexual assault programs are taking a huge funding hit at both the county and state level this year. How about King County Sexual Assault Resource Center (KSARC) or Domestic Abuse Women's Network (DAWN)?

There is no end to the list of worthy candidates, but here are some especially good ones:

The Service Board
Bike Works
Interaction Transition
Pike Market Senior Center (and food bank)
Youth Suicide Prevention Program
Operation Nightwatch
Childrens Home Society--Therapeutic Foster Care

Animal Talk Rescue on Roosevelt. They are literally overflowing with cats and kittens right now and they would seriously appreciate anything to keep their no-kill rescue going.

What about The Compass Center, the low-income/homeless charity for which Teresa Butz was on the board of directors? I'm not familiar with the work that they do but it would be a nice tribute to her.

Teen Feed and The People's Harm Reduction Alliance (they run the needle exchange in the U-District).

Give it to agencies that are grassroots and really need the money.

Many of the orgs listed here (e.g., Youthcare and Solid Ground) are quite well established and have an existing donor base/funding stream.

I agree with 26, fund the grassroots! Perhaps split the amount between two or three of them? How about Red Eagle Soaring for one of them?

Seattle Human Society. With the king county animal shelter under likely total dis-funding there are going to be hundreds of animals needing a new shelter or they will likely be put to sleep.

People's Place - the brand new group that is creating transitional housing indoors for the very recently homeless who have been outside. We are self-managing and have broad political and financial support. We are committed to keeping families together and helping people stay with their beloved companions - human, canine or feline!

The most valuable part of our lives is community and when all is looking very bleak, companionship is our anchor.

The short term plan is to convert a hotel into temporary transitional housing until a non-profit can be formed and funding secured for a permanent, legal facility. We believe that this solution can be funded by January.

People's Place currently has 40 members and needs emergency funding to help carry us throught the winter. Our goal is to give people a stable place, so that jobs and permanent housing are possible. The People's Place is just the first rung on the ladder to self-sufficiency and permanent housing.

People's Place is committed to safe and secure indoor housing and allows no alcohol, drugs, or domestic violence and is working with potential neighors to secure an appropriate location. Our neighbors can be assured that we intend to be a part of their communities and are committed to safety and good relationships with police, neighborhood leaders, politicians and the city. We will volunteer in the neighborhood that we settle in and have regular Spaghetti Dinners planned so that the new neighbors can get to know us.

After a short period of triage, we now all have winter coats, shoes, personal hygience supplies, a change of clothes and badly needed medicines, thanks to the financial help of individuals and churches.

We are self-managing our food and personal needs, cooking communally and intend to use the money from Strangercrombie (if you choose us) to lease housing.

Please vote for us! We need your help.
