Gay Dough

Posted by Dominic Holden on Mon, Oct 5, 2009 at 1:13 PM

The Equal Rights Washington Education Fund, a nonprofit barred from investing much of its funds in electoral politics, can't spend money on ads about Referendum 71. But they can spend money on an ad this ad featuring Charlene Strong, who lost her partner in a flooding disaster, talking about being barred from her partner's hospital room:

It's a moving ad. I've got a call into ERWEF to ask where the ads are running. I hope it gets played in the suburbs and Eastern Washington, where folks may know about Referendum 71 but may aren't exposed to many actual domestic partners. Or... aren't exposed to any gay people.

UPDATE: Connie Watts, the director of ERWEF, says the group is running the ads "all over" the state. They will air though the end of the week in Seattle, Walla Walla, Yakima, Tri Cities, Vancouver, and Bellingham. "Then we are giving opportunities on our website for people to buy more airtime anywhere they would like to," she says. Watts adds that the commercials are entirely educational and have "no coordination with the campaign" to Approve R-71.

I am interested in the background to the hospital visitation story. This is Seattle. Where Dan Savage has written about how a local hospital let him stay with his hospitalized partner, no-questions-asked. Where local hospital staff didn't blink an eye as we pulled in all sort of non-relatives during my grandmother's last hours. What hospital did this occur at and what were the circumstances?

Now this is a well done ad. Campaign to approve ref 71 take note.

I'm in Spokane, and just yesterday my 19-year-old neighbor asked about the Approve Ref 71 sign in our yard. When I told him about some of the rights that are denied gay couples he said, "Man, that's messed up. I mean, they should be treated as equal. I don't know why they choose to be gay, but, you know, whatever."

He seemed genuinely surprised when I gently told him that I didn't think it was a choice and that instances of homosexuality have been documented in other species. "And besides, who would choose to be on the receiving end of homophobia? You know how cruel people are."

He looked thoughtful, but I still can't get the kid to register to vote. Baby steps, I guess.

This is a totally sincere question: What hospital was her partner taken to that they refused her entry to the hospital room? I live near Madison park, and have only ever had great treatment from all the staff of nearby hospitals. This sounds like a nightmare, and I'd be interested to know which facility was so homophobic.

For those interested, I found this link from a wiki article on Kate Fleming (Charlene's partner). It's a link to an article in the SGN from Nov 2007 with a few details about not only the problem at the hospital but also at the funeral home.

To help the ERW Ed Fund keep this ad on the air, go to http://www.equalrightswashington.org/air….

For $17, you can show it on CNN in Yakima. Or Walla Walla. As little as $55 for Spokane.

Are any of the ads on TV saying anything about how R71 affects straigh senior citizens. I would hope so, since this is the most reliable voting block. I hope all the ads aren't focusing solely on how it affects gay couples. In arizona 4 years ago, they defeated a same sex marriage ban, because it also included straight senior citized DPs. They were able to get the enough senior voters to vote it down in a conservative state. I hope wer'e not ignoring that strategy.

Yes, it is a nice video.

However, with no tie-in to Approve R-71, it's value is diminished somewhat. There will be lots of confusion over what R-71 is, and which way to vote.

The Approve R-71 campaign has to be very aggressive about making sure to undo the confusion. Approve! Approve! Approve, to keep our rights.

Get some of that advertising down in Mason County. They are littered with Reject 71 signs all up and down highway 3 from Shelton to Bremerton. We don't want a repeat of Prop. 8.

Brandon, I'm sure that they're planning another march to Cal Anderson park to help with that. It seems that what little Yes on 71 advertising I've seen is focused on appealing to Seattle voters.

The Approve Ref: 71 had not aired any media. What you are seeing - just Seattle Activism.

Sorry, but I can't go to Mason county to do anything.

Well let's hope the MS money helps buy some ad time in Mason and other eastern counties. And that the ads don't help the R71 opponents by making it seem that this is a vote about gay marriage.
