Google Books now has every issue of Life Magazine from 1935 to 1970 available for browsing and reading.

Here is every article mentioning Seattle in that time. Here are all the Howard Hughes articles. Here's what they had to say about health care back in the day. I lose hours of my life when Google does shit like this.

This is so cool. Hells Angel Sonny Barger bought the striped shirt Lee Marvin is wearing (from The Wild One) and wore it whenever he met with the police. And the original 1947 scary biker photo (staged!) sort of indirectly led to inventing the term "One percenter" because of a garbled interpretation of these letters.

Growing up my Grandfather had back issues of Life magazine stretching back to the '40s; I always liked going through those when I went to visit him. These are bringing back a ton of good memories.

I just saw a terrific ad for an American Motors Marlin. Sixty-five, baby.

And by "sixty-five", I mean "sixty-six", of course.

Elenchos, why are you and your thuggish beer-swilling gearhead henchmen trying to destroy America like that? And, come to think of it, it's been more than sixty years; why haven't you succeeded yet?

Read the Letters to the Editor about 'Homosexuality in America' in the July 17 1964 issue. They're really quite incredible.

This is all opposition research for me.

But the answer to your question is that after the angry letters, Life refers you to a positive portrayl of motorcyclists, on page 122-117. The pictures, as you can see, undid all the damage.

A wonder to me when I first discovered it in a library in 1987, is the Oct. 30 1939 issue. It has an article on chancellor Hitler and his watercolors.
