Boehner, Meet Slog

Posted by on Fri, Oct 2, 2009 at 12:14 PM

Slog tipper Daniel writes:

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) says he hasn't met anyone supporting the public option:

"I'm still trying to find the first American to talk to who's in favor of the public option, other than a member of Congress or the administration" said Boehner, whose sole recent foray into a public discussion of health care reform was a tea-party-style event in Ohio a few weeks back.

"I've not talked to one and I get to a lot of places," he told reporters at his weekly press availability. "I've not had anyone come up to me—I know I'm inviting them—and lobby for the public option .

"This is about as unpopular as a garlic milkshake."

Maybe Sloggers should give him a ring? 1-800-582-1001

He hasn't met any because every time one tries to talk to him, he sticks his fingers in his ears and yells, "LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU" until they go away - or just tells his staffers not to put through public-option-supporting calls and appointments so he can technically be telling the truth when he says something incredibly stupid like this.

If you have the patience to be talked down to by his staff, go ahead and call, but it's not as if he hasn't already proven himself quite adept at ignoring reality.

Called, talked to said (polite) staffer. Registered strong support as someone in a neighboring OH district. Asked why he didn't attend the Labor Day Labor picnic in Cinci if he was so interested in seeking positive opinions on the public option.

What does it matter? He wouldn't support it even if every other person he met was in favor of it.

Well duh: When all you talk to are your corporate overlords and fellow syncophants, you aren't going to hear any support for the public option.

But more to the point: As long as the boner keeps getting his checks from the insurance companies, why should he care?

Or just bypass calling and email him instead... here's the link.

I recommend pasting his quote into it and letting him know you do support the public option. Maybe we can overflow his inbox.

This guy must think that polls showing that nearly two-thirds of Americans support a public option are entirely fabricated by the left. Or the devil.

I was surprised to find myself enjoying a David Brooks column pointing out how rightwing blowhards get a lot of attention and are good at making the phones ring, but they don't actually deliver any votes. They mostly make being a receptionist in Congress a shitty job and drive ad impressions on blogs.

But sure, pick up the phone and call Boehner. Call ten times.

He has FAITH that the polls are wrong and he is right, Julie!

Really? No one in Piqua or Troy disagrees with you, Congressman Boehner? Imagine that! Funny thing is, they probably DO disagree with you, they just don't realize it. Maybe "seaweed in ice cream" would have been a more apt anomaly.

If drinking garlic milkshakes would give people with preexisting conditions health insurance, they'd drink one every day.

Wait, so Boehner doesn't use his voter-paid health insurance, which is government-funded?

I keep waiting for the teabaggers to burn their Medicare and Medicaid cards (a la Mother Doonesbury in Garry Trudeau's latest strips), and demand congressmen (and federal employees?) give up their public option.

I would like to see a survey of Medicaid users who know whether or not it's a government plan. Also, I expect we would see blue->red state tax payments to cover Medicaid and Medicare.

@17,

I bet Medicaid users know it's government funded if only because they have to submit and resubmit applications constantly to maintain their benefits. Medicare users, I'm not so sure about. Dementia is a tragic thing.

Mmmm, garlic milkshake! That might not be half bad. To an A-haya-an, though, "hot" Tostitos salsa is way too exotic. Also, Boehner should get out more.

One of the most disingenuous utterings from a politician I've ever heard, right along with Obama's "I happen to be a proponent of a single-payer, universal healthcare plan"
