Today The Stranger Suggests

Posted by The Stranger on Wed, Sep 30, 2009 at 11:00 AM

Film

'Crimes and Misdemeanors'

Like Interiors, Crimes and Misdemeanors indulges Woody Allen's oddly romantic view of WASP life. Like Hannah and Her Sisters, it's a great Woody Allen movie featuring the man in a supporting role. Unlike either, 1989's Crimes and Misdemeanors involves a murder, and though the hand of the writer/director can feel exceedingly heavy, the big ideas, great performances, and sporadic bursts of comedy make this one of the man's best. "Roman Polanski raped a child. Let's just start right there, because that's the detail that tends to get neglected when we start discussing whether it was fair for the bail-jumping director to be arrested at age 76, after 32 years in "exile" (which in this case means owning multiple homes in Europe, continuing to work as a director, marrying and fathering two children, even winning an Oscar, but never -- poor baby -- being able to return to the U.S.). Let's keep in mind that Roman Polanski gave a 13-year-old girl a Quaalude and champagne, then raped her, before we start discussing whether the victim looked older than her 13 years, or that she now says she'd rather not see him prosecuted because she can't stand the media attention. Before we discuss how awesome his movies are or what the now-deceased judge did wrong at his trial, let's take a moment to recall that according to the victim's grand jury testimony, Roman Polanski instructed her to get into a jacuzzi naked, refused to take her home when she begged to go, began kissing her even though she said no and asked him to stop; performed cunnilingus on her as she said no and asked him to stop; put his penis in her vagina as she said no and asked him to stop; asked if he could penetrate her anally, to which she replied, "No," then went ahead and did it anyway, until he had an orgasm."

Yeah, man, Woody Allen only fucks and marries his adopted step-daughter. He is a class act. Crimes and Misdemeanors is a great film, that much is true.

Schmader: you don't know what WASP stands for, do you?

Well not directly related to Allen, but apparently Woody Allen is involved in the effort to free Polanski. Given Allen's own inappropriate involvement with Mia Farrow's adopted daughter I don't think his name is of much help to Polanski.
(Allen is the crazy one here not Farrow)

Woody just defended Roman.

I think they're both great film artists, but I don't think anyone is above the law, except us Texans.

That said, I'm going to pass on the film, cause I got one of those last minute $25 donation McGinn tix to the Battle for Seattle at the Croc - they still have a few left (it was from a FB link that I clicked on last night). you can prob find it at his website which is like www.mcginnformayor.com or something

@ 5, is Allen involved in that effort or not? "Apparently" doesn't cut it.

@7,

Yes, he is.

And #4 is right. The characters in Crimes and Misdemeanors are Jewish, David.

@5: you're claiming Mia Farrow ISN'T crazy? she married Frank Sinatra. she has FIFTEEN children.

I think in the context of the dispute with Woody Allen that his actions were crazy. He tried to portray her as being crazy because she objected to Allen's relationship with her adopted daughter. Clearly in this case he is crazier.

As for marrying Sinatra or the 15 kids that is a different level of crazy.

@10 - yeah, but so is Angelina Jolie and Kate Plus 8 ... depends on the standards we're using.

@11,

Mia also accused Woody of molesting their biological daughter. I don't know what actually happened, but he certainly was very motivated to dismiss her as crazy.
