The Morning News

Posted by on Wed, Sep 30, 2009 at 8:28 AM

Horror in Guinea: "Guinean soldiers massacre 157 pro-democracy protesters.
Witnesses report looting and rape."

Tsunami in Samoa: 100 feared dead, with count expected to rise.

Meanwhile in Indonesia: 75 people are dead and thousands trapped under rubble after earthquake hits the island of Sumatra.

Broke Folks: U.S. poverty level at 11-year-high.

Please Hurry: U.S. to bring 4,000 soldiers home from Iraq next month.

Get Over It, Frogs, He Drugged and Anally Raped a Kid: Polanski's arrest shocks France.

Chill Out or Die: Stress-related disease killing off koalas.

Have You Heard the One About the 911 Dispatcher Who Got a Call Telling Him His Own House Was on Fire?: If not, here it is.

And back for a glorious third round as your morning treat, here's the PS22 Chorus, the pop-song-covering kids' choir that's been seen everywhere from The Today Show to Madison Square Garden. But their most perfect representation remains the classroom videos that started it all, where the close-up camera captures the fact that every single kid has been encouraged to perform like a superstar soloist. Here they are getting busy with some Bjork.

Thanks to yesterday's PS22 post, I spent an hour on YouTube watching their videos. Their teacher has a knack for good harmonies, and the kids are cute. I think Joga's been my favorite so far.

2: Uh, you realize the census data is from 2008, right? I don't think whatever dastardly socialist deeds Obama accomplished during his one month as president-elect compare with the months and years that came before.

@2: Oops, the figures are for the year ending 2008 and show W fielding an impressive YOY growth in poverty that hasn't been seen since Reagan.

@4: They say great minds think alike, but I'm not sure this is one those instances.

I think you're a doppelganger. And we must now do battle.

Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll released two weeks ago, Mallahan is down 3 points; McGinn is up 2.

Among Democrats, Mallahan had led by 3, now trails by 7, a 10-point shift to McGinn.
Among Republicans, Mallahan had led by 21, now leads by 13.
Among men, Mallahan had led by 3, now trails by 1, a 4-point shift to McGinn.
Among women, Mallahan had led by 8, now leads by 1, a 7-point shift to McGinn.
Among the youngest voters, McGinn has widened his lead from 6 points to 19.
Among voters age 35 to 49, Mallahan had led by 3, now trails by 3, a 6-point shift to McGinn.

I wonder what magic their teacher works to bring this out of them. What does he know that other music teachers don't?

I think this PS22 is healing rift I've felt between Bjork and I for several years since she walked off of the Stage during her performance at the Pier.

Damn. Can we get that teacher to teach at my kids school? Please?

I think it is disgusting that taxpayers' funds are being spent to promote the obviously un-American agenda of that long-haired, obviously un-American "teacher:" getting the children to suppress their God-given individuality in the service of some Icelandic socio-fascist ideology. This must be stopped.

Music teachers who introduce quasi-popular, interesting, dynamic songs to elementary school students are doing exactly what they should be doing; showing children that music is a form of expression. Getting the kids excited about learning these songs may help some of them to get excited about playing instruments later in life (and that shit is good for the brain).

In any case, singing Bjork when you're 9 is better then playing 'Hot Cross Buns', 'Yankee Doodle Dandy' 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' and their ilk on the goddamn recorder for fucking four months only to graduate to singing them the rest of the year. Fuck.

Not only is PS22 a great kids' choir they also possess the ability to travel back in time; check out Winnie Cooper in the 'I'll Be Your Mirror' video around 1:50 .. complete with hoop earrings, day-glow pink shirt and some sort of 'washed' jacket.

@17 O OK
