Poll: A Tie for Mayor

Posted by on Wed, Sep 30, 2009 at 9:46 AM

Both mayoral candidates, Mike McGinn and Joe Mallahan, have the support of 38 percent of likely voters, according to the results of a new poll by SurveyUSA. McGinn has gained two points compared to a poll by the same firm released a couple weeks ago and Mallahan has lost three points. However, the poll of 1,000 people has a margin of error of four points, and 24 percent of voters are still undecided.

But if this poll is accurate—and all polls should be taken with a shaker of salt—it appears that Mallahan's advantage is slipping on multiple fronts:

— Among Democrats, Mallahan had led by 3, now trails by 7, a 10-point shift to McGinn.

— Among Republicans, Mallahan had led by 21, now leads by 13.

— Among men, Mallahan had led by 3, now trails by 1, a 4-point shift to McGinn.

— Among women, Mallahan had led by 8, now leads by 1, a 7-point shift to McGinn.

— Among the youngest voters, McGinn has widened his lead from 6 points to 19.

— Among voters age 35 to 49, Mallahan had led by 3, now trails by 3, a 6-point shift to McGinn.

I hope this race ends in a 50/50 tie, with Joe Mallahan having forgot to vote.

Man, I wish McGinn would pull ahead already. I'd like to see him campaign as frontrunner for a while before election day.

Maybe all that talking to actual voters and having a comprehensive plan is working. Go figure.
What has Mallahan been up to anyway? Besides his policy paper on Monday I haven't heard of him doing any voter outreach. (Not that many people would consider releasing a paper outreach, but besides that there's nothing.)
Let's hope McGinn gets a lot of donations in the coming weeks, because Mallahan does that the money advantage in this race.

Most of that 24% is hold-out supporters of other primary contenders, it seems.

McGinn should court Nickels' endorsement, especially since Mallahan has fielded a strongly anti-ST group of advisers (including someone who has worked to block East Link). Mallahan has also opposed several key pieces of Nickels' transportation initiatives as well (Streetcars, certain bus expansions, Mercer Mess). Nickels was, at one time, also amenable to a S/T plan and trumpeted its benefits far and wide. Mallahan also neglected to vote on several of Nickels' big social ballot items. If Nickels values his legacy at all, he will throw his weight behind McGinn.

McGinn should offer Nickels a key transportation advisory position, just to ice the cake and make sure we keep Nickels' vision for transportation in the Puget Sound. Getting behind Mallahan would be incredibly abusive for Nickels.

Baconcat @7, I don't think there's any position McGinn could offer that would be a good career move for Greg Nickels. But as unfair as his primary defeat was, Greg Nickels needs to get over it, find a nuanced way to reconcile his tunnel position with McGinn's, and endorse McGinn.

For a career public servant and a modern-day, progressive, pro-business Dem like Greg Nickels, the sham that is the entire Mallahan candidacy has got to be a slap in the face.

Remember, if you want to vote for Mallahan, do it before Thanksgiving ... mail in your ballot around Nov. 15th.

No rush, it's not like you don't have more important things to do ...

@1 Right now I am leaning toward Mallahan. I think running a government like a business would be stupid. But, management experience does matter. McGinn looks like he has the Jimmy Carter disease to me. I like his values, but his style would be his undoing in office.

I am also pro-tunnel, pro-light rail, pro-arena, anti-street car. I also don't think there are huge differences in the candidates in other areas of policy.

@11 - Mallahan has never run a business. McGinn has. Mallahan works at a phone sales company, his experience is completely not applicable.

If you are for light rail, vote for McGinn, Mallahan believes only in more roads and more buses which he has no control over

1 - because he's not McGinn. That's all I need to know. I'd vote McGoo over McGinn.

See you all at the Crocodile Cafe tonite for the Battle for Seattle - proceeds go to support Dow, Mike, and our fave incumbent city council member - you can still get tix marked down to only $25 if you go to one of the campaign websites like www.mcginnformayor.com or whatever it is (is that the right one?)

PUSA ftw!

@11 in Mallahan's KUOW interview he said he only managed between 20 and 30 individuals - not department heads. Mallahan's management experience is not nearly as grand as he'd like us to believe.

Neither candidate is a good one, I guess it comes down to who is worse. McGinn is a nutcase, I'm going to have to vote for Mallahan. McGinn's idea of turning our city into the Bangkok of traffic scares me.

Nickels is damaged goods. I think I'd be more likely to vote for whoever he DOESN'T endorse!

@13 - What was McGinn's management experience? Be specific. I don't know why you think management experience is completely un-transferable from one context to the next.

Also, why do you think Mallahan does not support light rail?

@17 - Link?

Since I know how T Mobile is ran I can tell you this...

If Joe Mallahan runs the city like he has managed things in his little department (that know one seems to know what the hell they actually do) at T Mobile, we are all F*CKED if he wins.

Mallahan is a certifiable moron.
