And Now, The Military Coup Solution for Resolving "The Obama Problem"

Posted by on Wed, Sep 30, 2009 at 9:28 AM

John L. Perry, writing for the conservative site Newsmax:

There is a remote, although gaining, possibility America's military will intervene as a last resort to resolve the "Obama problem." Don't dismiss it as unrealistic.

The piece has now been pulled from the site, but you can read it in all its "nonviolent" coup-inciting glory here.

At what point does freedom of speech cross into sedition and treason? I'm actually serious. Is there a line?

@1: You are = you're. Grammar Nazi in a teapot.

@3 seriously though, that's the beautiful thing... look at all the crazy shit we get to do and say. The fact that this moron gets to write this batshit crazy garbage shows me that all is well in America. Why is the Stranger taking this so seriously?

Here's why predicting the worst case scenario is a win/win for all media sources:

1) If you're right and something bad happens, you get to crow "SEE?!?!?! I TOLD YOU SO!!!"

2) If you're wrong, you get to congratulate yourself and ask gloating questions like "AH, but who KNOWS what would have happened if I HADN'T raised the alarm."

There's probably a rule, or a law, or a trope that describes this better than I have.

@7: its the hypocrisy.

liberals got ignored or called traitors for opposing GWB's utter hubristic dry drunk idiocy and war crimes, and now paultards and know-nothings get to openly "discuss" (= advocate, wink wink) a military coup with nary a tut tut from "responsible" figures in the GOP or corporate media.

@9 lets wait and see what the reaction is; the story has only been blowing up in the last 24 hours. The website has pulled the article, and Dave Ross was talking about it on KIRO this morning.

This article is a clear act of sedition. An act that is very serious and very illegal. It could and should land the writer in prison.

This is not a tempest in a teapot. Read Thomas Friedman.

@11 Yes! If we don't like what they say, off to jail with them! I can't possibly see any problems with this idea!

I don't know who is more unAmerican , the moron advocating for a coup d'etat, or the moron that wants him silenced.

@13, but do you think that there is a line somewhere between "advocating committing a crime" and "planning to commit said crime" (as @3 alluded to)? I don't necessarily think that the article in question crosses that line, but clearly there is a point where "freedom of speech" becomes "serious threat to our national security."

I don't think it's out of line to pay attention to the people who are calling for coups and/or the assassination of the President. They might not be a serious threat right now, but they could become one (those talking about an assassination more so than those talking about a coup, I believe).

GITMO's too good for the America-hating terrorists who hate our President.

@10 It hasn't just been in the last 24 hours, it's been since Obama got elected- by an extremely wide margin. The majority of Americans wanted this president, but a few right-wing reactionaries can't stand being out of power. The gun sales going up since the election is the right-wing stirring up their base by saying Obama, the democratically elected President, is going to invade their small towns and impose socialism on them.
Calling for armed insurrection by the military is the second step, but the Conservative leaders know the military isn't going to do anything, so they are trying to incite the militia minded to do something.
We have the Iraq war because of these people, they know how to get things done and get out of any blame when the shit hits the fan.

@16 OK I'm just going to say this plainly: this coup d'etat fantasy (whether military or paramilitary) that you are considering is as fucking stupid as the Republican fear of a socialist takeover.

Not trying to be disrespectful, but when you give credence to these ideas you look as stupid as the teabaggers.

The fringe of both the left and right are becoming increasingly hysterical.

@17 I actually don't think a coup is very likely. I'm pretty sure it's the most absurd of concepts in modern America. There are far too many moderates to make a coup successful. But you can't deny the power of persuasion. There is an element of our society that sees 'the government' as the enemy. They are encouraged in this view by people in power who use this attitude against progressive ideas and encourage 'free-market' piracy.
I understand the right-wing hawks only have one value, and that's how much money can be made off a situation. There is more money in war and fear than in peace and acceptance.
I'm not being hysterical, I'm looking at the OK City Bombing, the assassination of JFK, and the snow-job of Clinton. The right uses propaganda very effectively, and the Democrats in power let them because they make money off the policies too.

That's the respect for democracy we've come to expect from the right in this country.
Hey teabaggers- In a democracy, sometimes you lose. Suck it up and quit whining.
Fortunately there's no evidence that anyone in the military share their contempt for the constitution.

Rotten666 - I seriously do not think that people on the left (including people on this blog) are running around wringing their hands about the possibility of a coup. I'm surprised that anybody on the right feels brazen enough to even talk about it openly, let alone actually think it could happen, but I think the actually probability of something like that happening is zero.

I don't think the probability of an assassination attempt is zero, however. So, I don't blame the people who are wringing their hands about the potential that all of the hatred and delegitimizing that's going on might lead a "lone gunman" to take action. Read the Friedman article linked @12 for a comparison of the current situation to Israel in 1995 and Rabin's assassination.

As @12 suggested, it is useful to read Friedman's piece as it reminds us of where ultra-right lunacy can lead.
