Never Mind

Posted by on Tue, Sep 29, 2009 at 11:33 AM

Claudia Rowe, who was going to join The Stranger on Thursday as our news editor, has been offered another job—a non-journalism job at the Marguerite Casey Foundation that, like many non-journalism jobs, pays more than journalism does. Rowe had applied for this job before applying to be our news editor and hadn't heard back. Until yesterday. Considering that Rowe has two children to support, she's made the decision to leave the field of journalism to take this other gig. We wish her well and still plan to publish her writing and...

We're hiring again.

WHAT THE FUCK.

No, that's not how it's done. This is just completely wrong.

I see why you hired a woman. According to Paul, they make 77% of what men do. That's a 23% savings, for those of you scoring at home.

The first thing any new news editor needs to report on is what the hell is going on in the Stranger news room. Losing your best reporter (Jonah) and then hiring but immediately losing your new editor are not good signs. Something is wrong here; Ms. Rowe shouldn't be leaving jobs she's accepted before she's even started them, and you shouldn't be announcing hires if they're not for sure.

I'll do it.

I edited my school newspaper from 2nd to 5th grade, all by myself. I was also lead reporter. I wrote mostly fluffy feel-good articles like one celebrating our lead cafeteria lady's 40th year with the school or the article about our brand new fruit juice machine.

I also made strong editorial decisions, like deciding to run a piece on the proposed "academy plan" that was eventually implemented about 12 years later, even though the teachers I interviewed thought it was above the comprehension of the students. Boy were they wrong when a group of 30 parents stormed a school board meeting and scuttled the planned implementation. They waited until I was out of their hair 8 years later.

Oh, and I wrote a letter publicly apologizing for accidentally tripping the Governor when she was visiting.

Integrity, grit and determination, that's Baconcat. And also an iron fist.

Fnarf - If I remember, I think they announced because publicola broke the news. But, I agree that leaving a job you've already accepted is in terrible form (regardless of which position she applied for first). Good thing that in doing so she's leaving the industry -- at least in my employment world, that type of thing would get you blackballed immediately.

@4 - What happened with Jonah anyway? Did that get buried on a Friday afternoon? I certainly missed it if there was any kind of announcement...

Aw, hell, I'd do it, and I even have the degrees and experience to back it up. But they couldn't afford me.

I think that the workers loyalty to their companies started to erode after the companies stopped being loyal to their workers (e.g., layoffs just before pension would kick in, shipping jobs overseas, etc.)

I'm not saying The Stranger is guilty of any of that, but the worker/company loyalty pact just doesn't exist anymore.

Besides, perhaps Ms. Rowe had a deal already in place or something, maybe The Stranger knew she might leave if she got the other offer.

@11 If I recall correctly, there was no announcement. Publicola broke that news too, and stated that the Stranger had no comment.

Wow. Guess that whole firing-Jonah thing was a little hasty and ill-advised? The right thing to do would be to call him and beg, but that would involve admitting you were wrong, so somehow I don't see it happening.

she'll regret it. i worked at the MCF and it is seriously disfunctional and the most abusive work environment i have ever experienced (and i worked at amazon.com). they've had almost 100% turnover since their inception. private foundation = private money = they don't have to follow any labor laws as long as their staff remains below a certain #. shanthi (the office manager) was abused by the assistant to the president for YEARS and then when that woman was fired, like a bad horror film, she became abusive to her subordinates just like that woman. On paper MCF looks great. In reality it is one of the most disturbingly dysfucntional and abusive places to work EVER. And it comes from the top down. The president not only condones the behavior, she practices it. Don't believe me? Find prior employees - one of them was even institutionalized. There's always one being bullied by the boss and everyone else sits quiet and pretends it isn't happening because they are so happy it isn't happening to them. My guess is she'll come running back to the Stranger before you are able to find anyone else to fill the job.

On paper MCF looks great. In reality it is one of the most disturbingly dysfucntional and abusive places to work EVER.

So, you're saying it's no different than the Stranger?

Well on the upside, they're still pounding the Weakly.

Funny thing is, the Weekly's web traffic has essentially been flat for a couple years now, while the Stranger's goes all over the place thanks to getting relinked by drive-by link readers.

But the Weekly's web audience is growing, albeit very slowly. The Stranger's traffic trendline, OTOH, is pointing downward.

I've felt all along that the solution to this whole thing would be to spin Dan off into his own blog and off the Slog. Make Dan into the national blog brand he already is, use that site to generate ad revenue, then use the revenue to reinvigorate the Stranger. Something needs to happen in a hurry, though. When you're down to a couple of art and food reporters, you're exactly where the Weekly was once New Times was done clearing out the newsroom.
