In Case Anyone Cares

Esmerelda, the "-ITALIAN-FRENCH-GREEK-MOROCCAN-SPANISH-MEDITERRANEAN-ETC..." restaurant on 12th Ave on Capitol Hill (just outside the two-block radius hack alert, haterz) that featured self-described "Slow Cooking and Fast Serving" ("If You Try It, You'll never Cook Again"), has closed. The Esmerelda space was previously a burrito/pizza restaurant. It will next be a "GREAT CHINESE FOOD" restaurant. I do not know what it will be after that.

I never ate at Esmerelda (and I never ate at the burrito/pizza restaurant that was there before it), but I always felt guilty about not eating there. And now it is gone.

The pizza guys were total dicks - and not in any good way...

Chinese is great.

Mind you, the best Chinese I've had was in France, and the second best was in New Zealand, since the dishes are normally adapted for local palates.

Now if we could get some French-influenced Chinese food ... yum!

I felt guilty about eating there. So I ate there. And got sick. Then I stopped feeling guilty.

I suppose we have a wave of missing cat posters to look forward to in the neighborhood now.

If the Chinese food delivers, then I'm all for it.

From what I've heard - this guy was the same guy that had the burrito/pizza joint. He closed those down (after a bad write up in the Stranger, so he said) and they a few months later opened Esmerelda. He was kind of a dickhead but I feel bad for any of his employees.

I live real close to that weird joint and have tried both. Don't feel guilty about Esmeralda unless soggy gross food is your thing.

Is this 12th and Denny? That little place that always changes?

I pray by Zeus and Esmerelda that they will serve GOOD Chinese food.

The food wasn't so bad, but the guy behind the counter fought us -- the concept is that you get one meat, one starch, one veg. My wife wanted to get two veg. The guy wouldn't let her. It all got to be like the Monty Python Spam routine. We eventually settled, but that Chinese food had better be good.

Good riddance. I can back up all claims of the owner being a total knob. My wife asked for ranch dressing once as a side for her slice of pizza and he said "this isn't fucking pizza hut." I politely asked for my money back, he balked and we had a yelling match. Peace out, dick cheese.

Seriously, look into "customer service" if you want to run a restaurant - it's ok to charge extra for special orders, but unless there's a long line, being a dick never works.

I loved his Burrito place on 15th for years (like, had my picture taken in front of it senior year of highschool) and when I moved to the hill last year, ate at the one on 12th (where the same lady made my burritos and remembered me!). The owner, the big cheese, is a fucking jackass and I hate him. Once, it was closed for renovations and I'd brought my friend there for what I promised to be a great fucking burrito. He was outside, and when I jokingly complained to my pal that it was closed, the owner looked at my friend and said, 'You need to teach your woman patience' because he's a fucking jerk. Ugh. Fuck him and I'm glad his stupid place closed. Luck to all the non-asshole employees. I usually won't patronize places with bad service, but that's how good those damn burritos were-I just didn't care, anything for that burrito. Now I'm angry again.

I was gonna lament that any place on the West Coast really doesn't need Yet Another Chinese Restaurant, but since very few people are sad to see Esmerelda's go - as interesting an idea as it sounds - bring on the kung-pao.

No, what we need on 12th is another asian fusion/sushi joint.

In case anyone cares more, I talked with Esmeralda's owner tonight about shutting down and selling the space: http://www.capitolhillseattle.com/2009/0…

I enjoyed the pizza/burrito place, but went to Esmerelda's once when it opened and was still under the dining concept and found it too expensive for what you got.

When they switched to take out, it just seemed too damned pathetic and it was obvious they were on borrowed time.

I went to Esmerelda's once and it was awful! I hope the Chinese place is better!
