The Morning News

Posted by on Mon, Sep 28, 2009 at 8:43 AM

What's Neon Green and Mauled by Bears?: The Seattle Seahawks.

The Flooding of the Philippines: The crisis deepens.

Sperm + Egg = Person?: Abortion foes pushing to amend state constitutions to define personhood at conception.

Hot New Portland Trend: Vandalizing churches.

You are Now Free to Photograph Heart's Boots: The EMP shelves its 9-year ban on cameras (because it became impossible to enforce).

Billions & Billions Served: The Apple App Store.

Sudden Fall: Expect a week with high temperatures in the 60s and lows in the 30s in Western Washington.

Diving Miss Daisy: New Hampshire woman celebrates 92nd birthday by skydiving.

And for your morning treat, here is the PS22 Chorus of Brooklyn, NY. This pop-song-covering kids' chorus has been seen everywhere from The Today Show to Madison Square Garden, but their most perfect representation remains the classroom videos that started it all, where the close-up camera captures the fact that every single kid is performing like a superstar soloist. I could not love them more.

Thank you David for seeing the beauty in these kids' faces (instead of possibly saying something smarmy). Kids, now more than ever, need the support of adults so they don't lose their childhood too soon. I'm not saying give them all a gold star and tell them they will ALL be the next American Idol. Just look at their beautiful faces and give them encouragement.

If personhood begins at conception, then can I claim the 12 embryos I have in frozen storage as dependents on my tax returns?

(I confess another slogger made that comment months ago, but I loved it so much I felt it deserved an encore)

"Mauled"? they lost by less than a touchdown in the last 2 minutes, using a backup QB. long way to go, and the NFC west isn't THAT great. jesus.

I usually abhor the sound of children singing, but these kids are amazing. I think I like their version of "I'll Be Your Mirror" better than the original.

the conception thing will never go over. if it were to become a reality, it could only be selectively enforced, because nobody is going to stand by while their behavior throughout their pregnancies is monitored for anything risky.

sat in the hot tub too long? got your heart rate up too high on the treadmill? ate unpasteurized cheese? let yourself be exposed to a virus and got a fever? all of these things can lead to birth defects, premature birth, and/or miscarriage - should those mothers be charged with murder/attempted murder?

it won't stop with abortions, because it can't. therefore it will never become reality.

Just because feminists and the people who criticize them have been on my mind lately, I've got to highlight this quote from a real live feminist. Her preoccupation? Fighting for women's rights, and by extension all heterosexuals' rights, to sexual freedom:

"It's so extreme it could literally outlaw IUDs and birth control pills," said Katherine Spillar, executive vice president of the Feminist Majority Foundation. ... Personhood efforts "are so extreme that people reject them," Spillar said. "But we take nothing for granted. We will fight it with everything we've got."

Why do feminists get such a bad rap when we owe them so much?

So if life begins at conception does that mean jerking off in a public restroom is child abandonment? Assault on a minor if one spoodges on the floor? Manslaughter if you wash the crusty gym sock? Homicide if you swallow? If a woman miscarries, what's the charge if abortion is murder? Negligent homicide? Manslaughter?

A zygote is not even an embryo, much less a person.

Looks like the Colts are gonna be dining on bird again this Sunday.
