Today there will be a documentary film crew here interviewing me for their upcoming film, "The History of Marriage." Please pray that the gist of the conversation will stay centered on Scripture and that God will get all the glory!

Telling people what you're praying about is wrong, according to the bible:

But whatever... christians pick and choose what parts of their book they want to follow and what parts they want to ignore.

If it stays centered on scripture, it will include approval of polygamy, a victim being forced to marry her rapist, men being obligated to father children with their dead brother's wives, divorce and remarriage is adultery, women not being allowed to choose who the marry, etc.

Well yeah, obviously no one even pretends to follow everything in the Bible, or weight everything in it equally, for that matter. That's where doctrine emerges - it's the reason why Lutherans are accepting and affirming of gays and lesbians, while Southern Baptists are not. It would literally be impossible to follow every single dictate of the Bible, because of all the contradictions. I think we've already established that quite firmly here on Slog. (which is to say, stop beating the dead horse, it's getting boring)

People not only pretend that they follow the Bible, they actually believe that they do. They just don't know what is really in the Bible.

Hernandez...the only dead horse here is the bible itself.

Why does God get all the glory? Did He invent marriage?

Well, speaking as someone who actually has personally confronted conservative Christians about some of their more obnoxious and damaging beliefs, my experience has been that they are aware of the contradictions in the Bible, they just always have some prepared way of explaining it away. Hate gays but eat shellfish? Well, apparently Jesus said something about not having restrictions on food, so that cancels out the shellfish thing. I'm sure that if you asked Hutch about it, he could quote some verse to explain why it's OK to tell others what he's praying about.

My underlying point is that underestimating right-wing Christians can be dangerous. This whole idea that they don't know and don't care about what's really in the Bible seems to be (in my opinion, based on observing your comments) rooted in the belief that every conservative religious person is a brain-dead moron. But those brain-dead morons were smart enough to get Prop 8 passed. And if we're not careful, they will get R-71 defeated as well.

Well said, Hernandez. They are indeed passionate people with regard to things they view as threatening, and should be taken seriously. That's my $0.02 based off personal experience.

I personally blame the Roman Empire for not trying harder to kill off their stupid religion early on
