Every Child Deserves a Mother and a Father, There Is No Morality Without Religion, Etc.

Posted by on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 9:39 AM

Doctors are for heathens:

An Oregon man convicted of criminal mistreatment in the faith-healing death of his 15-month-old daughter has been released from jail.... Ava Worthington had a large cyst on her neck that impeded her breathing and eating, contributing to her fatal pneumonia. She died in March 2008 while church members gathered around her for prayer and anointed her with olive oil.

Ava Worthington's father served less than two months. Her mother was acquitted.

This post, and Mudede's before it, are like a peas in a pod.

Ava Worthington is the most lovely name ever, but so much for good intentions.

You know, a lot of those folks over at Questionland wouldn't see anything wrong with this....

Is there nothing a little EVOO can't make better? Hmm... apparently there is.

I followed this in the news. I hope the baby, if I remember correctly, that they are expecting now will be healthy and strong.

Parents can avoid medical care for themselves if they like, but the state has to step in when their children's lives are in danger. Didn't a neighbor or non-cuckoo friend notice the kid was sick?

If their children ever make it to 18, they can avoid all the medical care they want.

Wait, what, they're having another baby? If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. I think I read that rule in a parenting guidebook somewhere.

they shoulda killed an albino.

They should be banned from medical attention for the rest of their lives. Doctors should all agree not to treat them, and to instruct them to pray, if they try.

Yep, there's no shortage of crazy in the world. I figured that one out a long time ago.

If you want to pray about your own illness instead of getting medical help, good luck. But doing this to an innocent child should be more than a slap on the wrist, it should be manslaughter.

Oh no, we'll run out of kids real soon at this rate. Particularly baby fundies.

I'm telling ya...
Heads on pikes may be a bit brutal, but the prospect of something like that might deter sadistic, faith-blind crap like this.
Oh, and the fellow church members would be liable as well.

When you believe in things that you don't understand then you (and your children) suffer.

This is one of the problems with believing in an imaginary being.

I heard if you eat the body parts of a religious fundie, you gain magical powers!

I don't know if the fundie has to be an albino or not.

Only two months. Who wants to bet that if this were some non-christian religion, they would have been sentenced to at least two decades.

At least in Oregon they can sentence them to something. Washington state's law basically has an exclusion in it that prohibits criminal prosecution of parents who don't seek medical care of their children for religious reasons.

@17: Yes, if only they had killed her as a fetus before she was able to feel pain.

Or are you one of those who believe the right to life ends at birth?

EVOO is for salads and drizzling over a nice chicken breast. It is not for curing tumors and pneumonia. This guy and the entire church who refused to pick up a phone and get this child help should be in jail for the rest of their natural lives. This was not religion it was deliberate and ignorant murder.
