More Powerful Than a Speeding Mullet

Posted by on Tue, Sep 22, 2009 at 2:28 PM

io9 found a photograph of Nicolas Cage dressed in the Superman costume from Tim Burton's never-to-be-produced Superman Lives! project 11 years ago. This video is maybe the only thing on the face of the earth that can make me glad that Bryan Singer made Superman Returns. Even that shitty movie had to be better than where this project was going:

Now, see I would have paid to see a version of Superman that wasn't just another rigidly-narrow repeat of the same thing they've been doing for fifty years. But I get how conservative comic book fans are.

All "live action" cinematic super heroes pale in comparison to their hand drawn ancestors. Why even this first generation animated Supe is Superer than all that followed!

@1. Yep, they're usually morbidly obese and have bad skin too.

@1: elenchos, thanks for that! I've been reading comics and going to movies for 55-plus years, and I've never been able to work up much enthusiasm for ANY long-underwear-wearing character--but Superman was the worst! If he can do ANYTHING, then who cares WHAT he does? The more I see of him, the more "same old shit [big yawn]" it is to me. But I bet I could watch Tim Burton's Superman! Best wishes to everyone on the first day (approximately) of fall.

There is now word going around that this is a fake.

Superman is the greatest superhero and comic book character ever. Superman Returns was a fun time and I'm a fan of it.

I feel bad for Nick Cage, because he's a guy who loves this character so much he named his son after him, and he was so close to playing him and it all fell apart. That's really sad.

But... I am so glad it never got made.

I agree that superman needs to break out of the box, but this thing would have been an abortion.

Read some of these god awful scripts summaries

THe only good Nic Cage movies involved horrible accents. (i.e. Raising Arizona, Con Air, Vampire's Kiss)

Oh cmon, this is totally fake. That's a little plastic action figure with Nick Cage's head photoshopped on. Not sure about the hair (well, I'm sure it's BAD, but not sure if is Cage's, the action figures, or a third photoshop element).

@6, don't feel too bad -- Cage and Burton got paid as if they made the movie, anyway, thanks to WB agreeing to that before they saw the shit they'd end up with onscreen.

@9, supposedly the weird neckline is where the latex suit ended and would have to have been blended by makeup. The video shows only a small portion of how fucked up Burton's ideas for the movie were; you can't help but sense that his heart wasn't in it. Also, that he's an awful, awful director.

That said, no need for anymore Superman movies, anyway, or any comic book hero movies.

I'm sorry, but that last shot with Cage in costume is the fakest fake that ever faked.
