Charles P. Le Warne is up at Third Place Books tonight. He is the author of a book about a popular old Queen Anne commune. The book is titled The Love Israel Family : Urban Commune, Rural Commune.
Janet O. Dallett is at University Book Store. Dallett is a Jungian analyst, and her book, titled Listening to the Rhino: Violence and Healing in a Scientific Age, is about the psychology of creative people.
The great Lesley Hazleton is at University Temple United Methodist Church tonight. She reads from her newest book, After the Prophet: The Epic Story of the Shia-Sunni Split in Islam. Hazleton probably doesn't want anyone to remember this, but I love her first book, Driving to Detroit. It was a memoir about Hazelton, who used to be a really entertaining automotive journalist, driving to an automobile industry show in Detroit. I haven't read it in over a decade, but the climax of the book, which involves a crash test dummy, still sticks with me in the way that dozens of other books do not. Now she writes about religion and she is even better. This is the reading of the night.
The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here. And if you're planning on staying in and you're looking for personalized book recommendations, feel free to tell me the books you like and ask me what to read next over at Questionland.
