Youth Pastor Watch

Posted by on Thu, Sep 17, 2009 at 9:20 AM

Arizona:

YPWOBannion.jpg
A 25-year-old youth pastor from a Tempe church has been arrested after admitting to officers he engaged in sexual acts with a 14-year-old girl at least three times over the last two months, according to Chandler police. Joshua O'Bannion of Gilbert, who was working as an intern at Christ Life Church, 1137 E. Warner Road, was arrested at his home on Sept. 9 on suspicion of sexual conduct with a minor and sexual abuse, according to the Chandler Police Department.

California:

A 45-year-old Folsom man who defrauded investors in a $13 million Ponzi scheme was sentenced Tuesday to nearly 20 years in prison. Stefan A. Wilson, who is also known as Stephen K. Wilson, wiped out retirees' life savings and depleted money meant for college funds.... At his sentencing, victims spoke about the financial devastation that Wilson's crime caused. One family said they lost a farm that had been in the family for 60 years and was paid off until Wilson convinced them to refinance it and another victim said Wilson took money from his son, a disabled war veteran. They also said Wilson, a former youth minister, lied to them about donating 10 percent of his profits to Christian charities and they trusted him because of his affiliation with the church.

Holy shit, did you include a person in Youth Pastor Watch because he's FAT?

@1 He's included because he's in the news just like all the other non-criminals in YPW, but that won't stop anyone from making the accusation.

I'm thinking this'll top the most commented list by noon PDT.

Bravo should do the opposite show, where anorexics and bulimics compete to gain weight, "The Thinnest Gainer" or maybe there's a better title out there.

@3 I think the show could have the same name, just emphasize Loser in the pejorative sense.

@2 yeah, I guess I get your point...
"in the news" as the qualifier...
but, having grown accustomed to YPW being such a rogues gallery of lecherous pederasts, and knowing Dan's distaste for the overweight...
I just found the inclusion of the fat dude to be a bit... ham-fisted. (Perhaps a poor choice of words on my part)

@5, it's just Dan trying to stoke the comments. Sometimes he's so transparent, it's a fucking joke.

I saw this dude on the Biggest Loser premiere and immediately thought of YPW - he talks about his wife and kids, but he couldn't be more transparently gay, gay, gay!

Please god let part of his transformation be coming out of the closet. Muwahahahahaha

Good luck to Mr. Algaier. That's all I have to say.

You know, Dan, I have no complaint with your opinions about obesity but that was pretty low.

Listen people, always double-check the third name in YPW. That's the spot where Dan sometimes, not always, highlights youth pastors who are doing good in the world. Never assume that all are skeezy scumbags.

I didn't include him because he was fat. I included him because he's everywhere -- he's all over the news, arguably the most famous youth pastor in America right now, and that's the photo the show released of him.

Sheesh.

*ahem* If I may...

People complained when Dan only had chi-mo youth pastors in the column, so he decided to add "normal" youth pastors to add some balance.

Now people complain that he's showing good non-chi-mo youth pastors right alongside the baddies.

Poor Dan. He just can't make this inherently stupid column work, and it's all your fault. You fickle, whiny fucks.

@Dan:

People have been acusing you of HATING fat people. I have simply said you hate fat people that pretend it's genetic, or people that claim being 400 lbs is "healthy". But apparently you are a bigot towards fat people, and you just despise them. Please make a note if it.

Petition gatherers for Ref 71:

People have been accusing you of HATING gay people. I have simply said you hate gay people who want to get married, or claim that they should have as enough privacy in their own relationships that people don't have to vote on whether they can be married or not. But apparently you are a bigot towards gay people, and you just despise them. Please make a note of it.

Dan strikes again putting Mr. Algaier on this because he is overweight and wants to better himself - for those of you who have never travled to the south and OK is included in that (and yet you make fun of it) - there are a lot of straight men that come off as gay - it is the same thing as in Britian - it is no one's buisness but thier own. Hey why don't you go on Bill O'reily and you can spread your hate together. May you get a glandular disorder and blow up like the fat people you despise- God Bless :)

And all this time I thought the point of your Youth Pastor Watch was to highlight/call out religious people who hate on gays while acting as if they are without sin themselves.

I mean, you do realize that most of your Youth Pastor Watch segments have a negative tone, right?

@18: Nice try, but being FAT is a condition. And it is one that is unhealthy, and 99% of the time it is not genetic, it is by CHOICE. And when people say it's not, it is annoying as shit. If people are like, fuck it, I like food and don't wanna work out, that is admitting and accepting that condition. Which is fine. But when people claim 300 lbs is 'healthy', it is bullshit and needs to be stopped. Having a nation of fat ass people is not good for the country or the individuals who are overweight.

Being gay is not a choice, it is not a condition. You can't stop being gay, and you can't 'change' it. However, gay people who turn "straight" by claiming it is a condition are equally as annoying as fat people that say they have bad genes. And Dan blasts both people equally. How hard is that to understand?

But nice try. Are your FEEWLINGS HURT or something?

Why YPW sucks:

The YPW features every Youth Pastor in trouble Dan can find (several times over, usually) from all over the globe.
These individuals represent about o.o1% of all youth pastors.
Every couple of months Dan tacks on some sap at the end who is not in trouble (but usually geeky, a backhanded way to inject more smug snark and assholery).
The false picture Dan creates is 20-30 in trouble for every one not.
The reality is that only a tiny minority get in trouble.

The question is: is Dan too stupid to do it right or merely a malicious petty asshole?

@22
If being gay is not a choice and you can't stop being gay and you can't 'change' it how do any gay people ever turn "straight"?
Instead of being annoyed shouldn't we be amazed?
And what is the deal with bisexuals?
Are they faking?
Or is it just that they are the only ones honest enough to admit that they do the homo thing when, and because, they want to.

Original Monique 25
@24: Gay people don't turn straight. They pretend to be straight. Bisexuals are also not a condition. There are people born who like both sexs. That is different than being gay. If you don't understand that simple fact, dude (or chick) I can't fucking help you.

@23 - Dan does this to mimic the right wing media and political nut jobs that demonize gays due to (their perception of the )behaviours of the very few. What is good for the goose is good for the gander.

Maybe they were pretending to be gay.
Maybe they are bi and just shifting into a hetero phase.
Maybe they weren't really gay but just confused. Or in prison.

Um, can I ask you to put a black censor box over the boobies. If you showed a topless woman with ta-tas that big that picture would be NSFW. I think it's only fair topless guys with massive hooters get the same treatment. I don't know what the hell website my workplace will ban next due to some really weird prudes in IT and Slog is one of the few sites I like I can still see.
