If it was my cat, I'd think he was coming back only because he's hungry.

Fuzzy little jerk.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that kitty might have had some help along the way...

You know, there are ferries. A friend of mine, who was quarter-Tasmanian (hard to get much more native than that), used them all the time.

The cat was almost certainly stolen. Yay for microchips!

Cat hitched a ride. It never would have made the swim. That's one of the most shark-infested (is that politically correct anymore?) places in the world. In fact, it's famous for its Mako shark population.

@6, the ferry is only used by people who need to bring cars over. It takes almost twelve hours and is one of the roughest ferry crossings anywhere (please tip your puke steward). It only runs three times a week. And it leaves you a long drive short of Hobart, which is where most Tassie visitors are headed. And it costs a fortune. It's nothing like a Washington State ferry; more like a short cruise line. You can get hammered and play the pokies (slot machines) the whole way if you want, whoopie.

Meanwhile, you can fly to Melbourne for $50 anytime you want, or any of 25 other Australian cities, or even Bali, for a little more. Which is what everybody does, even "quarter-Tasmanians", whatever that means.

I didn't say it was an easy ride.

But the idea that the cat swam was just so nutso on the face of it.
