Chamber of Commerce Says "Approve R-71"

Posted by on Tue, Sep 15, 2009 at 3:40 PM

In the footsteps of five large companies that issued a statement yesterday, the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce came out today in favor of approving Referendum 71, thereby upholding the domestic partnership bill.

“This law is about the rights and responsibilities of adults in committed relationships raising families, running businesses and owning property. Diversity and inclusiveness in the workplace, and in our state as a whole, are core values in our business community,” Chamber chair Tayloe Washburn said in a statement. “We must protect and enhance them if we want to attract, retain and grow the talented workforce needed to stay competitive in the global economy. Supporting the Approve R-71 campaign sends the right message about the economic environment we have and want. ”

So how do they plan to "support" the campaign?

"A major factor in our decision to support is that it would likely have a positive impact on proponents’ fundraising efforts," says spokeswoman Christina Donegan. "We look forward to working with the campaign to support their efforts."

That's not quite the $5,000 commitment from Vulcan yesterday, but it's nice. Good job, Chamber of Commerce. Now invite all your wealthy friends to an "Approve- R-71" fundraiser.

In the meantime, you can DONATE to the Approve R-71 campaign HERE.

$5k from Vulcan sounds to me like "we don't give a shit either way, but could use the goodwill from the gays". I know Paul Allen is more than 100 times wealthier than I am.

Yeah...I mean, every little bit helps, but I bet he's spent more than that on Star Wars figurines.

Cool that the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce is on the "approve" side, though. When I see "Chamber of Commerce" I usually expect fairly conservative politics.

Cheap assed Vulcan - $50,000. would have been no stretch - they just insulted themselves ... now I will not buy one of their condos.

Dom, sent the e-mail that has the raw jpeg of what the placard says.

None spotted "in the wild" here in Seattle quite yet, though!

It will be interesting to see what the APPROVE side comes up with for yard signs. I do hope it's something about Protecting Marriage and Protecting Children. If not, kiss your D.P. Rights good bye.

They're saving their money up for the fancy version of SR-520 floating bridge - that's when their checkbooks open.

No, seriously. Mark my words.

@3 I really, really despise the way they designed that yard sign. It's so blatantly pandering to a sentiment that has *nothing* to do with the issue at hand. Really now, using children as a stand-in for one's own biases? I'm hopeful, though, that the design is so distasteful to all but the most deluded right-wing wackos that it actually helps get Ref 71 approved.

Can you even imagine the frame of mind you'd have to have to put something like that on your lawn? It's got to be something like 'I'm glad I'm helping keep those homo perverts away from my kids' and just thinking about it almost makes me sick to my stomach.

@12: Well, it helps moderates and those who support domestic partnerships realize what the wrong vote is at any rate.
