Tonight at Central Cinema: Crazy About Swayze

Attention movie-lovers: Tonight and tomorrow brings the continuation of the double-feature cinema event Crazy About Swayze at the Central Cinema. The event features the trash-classics Dirty Dancing (at 7pm) and Road House (at 9:30 pm) and is produced by Clinton McClung's The Action Pack—the brains behind this past weekend's reportedly awe-inspiring Michael Jackson Sing-Along Video Tribute, as well as the legendary Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical-episode sing-alongs.

In advance of tonight's and tomorrow's Swayze fests, I made McClung answer some questions...

How did your life as a cinema impresario begin?
I started working at a cool old art deco theatre in Boston called the Coolidge Corner Theatre. We had a full-time film booker who picked our feature films but I was encouraged to do more with our midnight movies and other events. At first I just played movies, but then started incorporating more live events and audience participation. I think I realized that I could do a lot more with film to make it even more fun on the night that we showed the Andy Kaufman wrestling pic "My Breakfast with Blassie". We introduced that night with me dressed as Mexican wrestler "El Gato Azul" staging a knock-down drag-out fight against Syphilis. Then came Buffy...

Yes, tell me about Buffy.
The Buffy Sing Along was our first great success. I started doing those in Boston in 2004(ish), then my friend and Action Pack partner Henri started doing them down at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin. It was the launching pad for us to do more shows, and so far is the most successful. I toured the country for almost a year exclusively putting on Buffy shows until Fox pulled the plug.

What should audiences expect from "Crazy about Swayze"?
There won't be any interactive stuff for the Swayze shows, just the two most awesome Swayze films of all time. But to make the double feature into something truly special, each film is preceded by extra Swayze-ness. Before Dirty Dancing, there are sing along versions of four songs from the movie (dancing is also allowed), and before Road House I compiled a collection of Swayze's toughest movie trailers. It is, however, a Ghost-free zone.

What movie have you seen the most in your life?
Xanadu! Hands down. Stay tuned for a Xanadu sing along when we launch the our Maninc Monday series at Central Cinema. That will be starting in January.

Whatever cache Road House enjoyed in the past has surely been diminished by its every third day showing on AMC. To be fair, I was never crazy about Swayze, but I have younger friends who have to mop up after watching Dirty Dancing.

In my morning catch-up on Slog, I saw this and thought "wow, they put that up quick" and then I checked the timestamp. Eerie timing.

I think I'm going to set up the 12' back-yard movie screen and do a Swayze night her in MD.
