Three classes and a separate car for women & children. Yucky.

Um, yeah- if public transit is only requirement you have for the city in which you live. Everyone else, stay the hell away.

Dubai is not a great example of "If they can do it why can't we?".

They're so rich with ill-gotten oil money that they don't know what to do with it. It's not really saying much that they can build public transit.

Try again, this time use a little critical thinking.

Yes, they have public transit. Meanwhile, they continue to rape the environment.

They also have a monorail. But @1, @2 and @4 are also correct. Jean (she works for the government there teaching western law) was telling me how it really is - imagine a Seattle where there's absolutely NO planning department and rich connected people do whatever takes their fancy this week.

Dubai is a place of startling excesses. Not a great example to promote anything, really, except the tackiness of ostentation.

I'll stay in Chicago, thank you. Or move back to Portland.

@4, Dubai doesn't have any oil wealth, ill-gotten or otherwise. You're thinking of Abu Dhabi. What Dubai has is financial services, a critical air hub, the Arab World's shopping Mecca, and the mother of all real estate bubbles.

It doesn't matter how many stations you have if they all open up to Dubai. No thanks.

@11 - ok, fine - if you want to split hairs, Dubai is rich because it's the trade hub of the middle east. And because oil-rich Arabs and Iranians (as well as other rich folks from across the world who want minimal gov't oversight, no taxes and cheap, unreglated labor) launder and spend their money there.
