Cure for What Ails You

Posted by David Schmader on Mon, Sep 14, 2009 at 11:04 AM

Oddly unnerved about all of this?

Then watch this, which is so effing weird it's impossible to think about anything else for the duration of its running time.

Yes, that is an ancient Mae West (boasting some amazing old-school plastic surgery) and a young Timothy Dalton, from the 1978 film tragedy Sextette. Thank you, YouTube, for making such horrors/pleasures so readily available. (Once upon a time, you had to watch the whole horrible movie to see this shit.)

(Also, linked photos above come from Andrew.)

Hooray! And if this whets your appetite, and you've enjoyed Mae West's early work, and respect what a genuine freakydeak's icon she is, don't miss seeing the whole wonderful thing.

Kim: Scroll the page up a bit so the YouTube embed is almost off the page -- the pictures always go to center screen.

While the Sloglight is briefly on all things West, I wish Claudia Shear would drop by with her awesome "Dirty Blonde," or let somebody put Rudinoff in it here.

She was in her mid-80s when she did Sextette - possibly one of the worst films ever made. And by that I don't mean so bad that it's good. I mean leave-the-theater-15-minutes-into-it bad. Still, I admire her energy at that age. Hell, I'm in my fifties and there are days when I can barely scare up the energy to brush my teeth.

Timothy Dalton was such a looker. I remember falling in teenage love with him as Heathcliff in the 1970 re-make of Wuthering Heights. Sigh.

Yes, I've got too much time on my hands, so I went to Wikipedia It seems that West WROTE the script, and that there was a SPEAKER CONCEALED IN HER HAIR:

"Due to the numerous [script] changes, West agreed to have her lines fed to her through a speaker concealed in her wig. ... West sometimes appeared disoriented and forgetful and found it difficult to follow directions. Her now failing eyesight also made navigating around the set difficult. [The director] eventually began shooting her from the waist up to hide the out-of-shot production assistant crawling on the floor, guiding her around the set."

unlike mae west, dalton has actually gotten better-looking with age. he was much hotter 25 years later.

and it helps he doesn't sing anymore.

@14

Yeah, but what's Dalton going to look like when he's in his 80s? Mae West was still pretty damned sexy when she was in her 50s & 60s, too.

And the last time I saw Dalton (Hot Fuzz, 2007) he wasn't looking all THAT good.
