She studied writing with James Baldwin. She wrote Fucking A, The Death of the Last Black Man in the Entire World, and won a Pulitzer for Topdog/Underdog. She wrote Girl 6 for Spike Lee and won a MacArthur Genius Grant. She also wrote and launched the colossal but not-entirely-successful 365 Days/365 Plays project, but whatever. She's a genius.

And on Sept 22, Suzan-Lori Parks is coming to speak at the University of Puget Sound. Tickets are $15. You can buy them over the phone: 253-879-3419.

You can't refer to the writer of Girl 6 as a genius. Not unless you've actually seen it, I mean. If you haven't then sure, she can split the atom like any other Einstein.

Girl 6 had some real moments of genius. And she probably didn't have anything to do with the schlocky phones falling from the sky at the end.

The idea that a genius would only ever produce works of genius is absurd.

You can't refer to the author of TOPDOG/UNDERDOG as a genius, except as a knockoff genius.

TOPDOG/UNDERDOG was much better when it was a Sam Shepard play called TRUE WEST.

Being a "genius" because you wrote this, that or the other thing is rather subjective. Winning a MacArthur Genius Grant isn't. She's a genius because the definition of a genius is "won a genius award".

She's lovely and down to earth in person. Go see her because she's interesting, not because she's a "genius".
