Seattle Police Investigating Home Invasion In West Seattle

Posted by on Wed, Sep 9, 2009 at 5:04 PM

Seattle police are looking for a group of men who forced a woman into her West Seattle apartment, tied her up, and threatened to rape her before making off with a large pile of cash last week, a police report says.

According to the police report, the woman told police that when she arrived home from work around 5:30 a.m. on September 3rd, she found that someone had tried to break in to her apartment. The woman found that her apartment door had been damaged, and a piece of paper and wad of gum had been used to cover the peepholes on her apartment door and a unit across the hall.

As the woman was standing outside of her apartment—near 9th Avenue SW and SW Barton Street—a man approached her, carrying a foot-long butcher knife, and forced her into the apartment, the report says. Inside, the man ordered the woman to sit on a chair in the living room, where he pulled out a roll of packing tape which he used to gag her. The man also blindfolded the woman, and bound her wrists with a belt, the report says.

The woman told police she heard the man leave and return with two other men, who began ransacking her apartment. The men searched the woman's house without saying a word, until one of the men approached her, put a knife to her throat, and said "where's the money?"

The woman stated that she didn't have any money, but one of the men began rubbing her hands, thighs, and groin and told her that if she didn't tell them where the money was, they would rape her.

The woman directed the men to a pile of money hidden in the bottom of a cardboard box covered in clothes. The report says the men took $5,000 in cash and $3,000 in jewelry from the victim.

After about an hour, the woman told police she heard a car honk outside of her apartment and the men fled. A few minutes later, the woman was able to free herself and call police.

SPD's robbery unit is investigating.

Um...who keeps five thousand in cash in their apartment.

Inside job or insurance fraud.

Sounds drug-related.

I have found that hoarding money keeps IRS liens, collection agency court victors, and crazy "lovers" from getting their hands on it.

When I was in a cash-laden situation, I was able to pay off my bills as scheduled and move out from a dangerous situation. The money came from my ex-husband who owed it to me from years before, who paid me with no lawyers involved. And also, _no_drugs_involved_.

I hid mine well, but a kidnapper or rapist could have found its location as this victim's did. Maybe a bank safety-deposit box would have helped; maybe they wouldn't have believed her even if that had been the case.

Oh, well, we're all just speculating. I hope the victim holds up OK.

Inside job. Someone knew she had the money. I'm not surprised about the cash hoarding. Who trusts banks these days?

I'm on the bandwagon: It's pretty obvious they knew she had a large sum of cash. "Where's the money?" would be a rather unusual question otherwise... even the dumbest hoodlum would know to just take her purse.
