David Ellis makes two appearances today (at Seattle Mystery Bookshop and Third Place Books) with his new thriller The Hidden Man, which is about a missing girl. The protagonist of The Hidden Man is "a midwestern Everyman." This is what we call a cliché.

And then at Town Hall, Alison Gopnik reads from The Scientist in the Crib. The press release suggests that babies "are actually smarter, more thoughtful, and even more conscious than adults." Which does make you wonder. After all, who's cleaning up whose shit? I do take issue with the cover of this book, though. Here you had a chance to make a glorious Photoshop mess, of a baby in a crib wearing a white lab coat and playing with bunsen burners, and instead we get a tasteful blue cover with a baby's face. It's almost like they want us to take the book seriously, or something.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here. And if you're planning on staying in and you're looking for personalized book recommendations, feel free to tell me the books you like and ask me what to read next over at Questionland.

The New York Times took Alison Gopnik seriously, Paul. You're so much smarter than that, though, aren't you?
