Twitter is reporting that the classy, classy Congressman who yelled "You lie!" at the President during his health care speech is Representative Joe Wilson of South Carolina. Here is his Twitter feed. His personal website has crashed.

During a September 9th 2009 speech to Congress by President Obama, Wilson created controvery by calling out "You lie!" as Obama said there was no coverage for illegal immigrants in his healthcare plan. However, section 246 of the bill HR3200 is entitled "No Federal Payment for Undocumented Aliens" and states that no funds will be spent to cover illegal immigrants.

According to the follow-up analysis on NPR, there may be a potential "loophole" in Obama's plan that MIGHT allow illegal immigrants to buy into it; in other words, they wouldn't be entitled to health care based on other criteria, but could purchase care out-of-pocket - assuming of course they could afford it, which seems unlikely for all but a small minority of the undocumented.
(Regardless, Wilson is still an ass, and one can only speculate what the GOP response would have been say, eight years ago if a Democratic member had called shrub a liar to his face when he addressed Congress during the build-up to the Iraq invasion.)
But, what I haven't heard discussed - on either side - is how we'd deal with the financial drain on the system that already exists because many illegals end up in hospital ER's when they finally get so sick they become willing to risk being arrested just to get some treatment. Are we going to force health care providers to demand proof-of-residency before they agree to treat someone for tuberculosis or pneumonia or Swine Flu?

Why in hell don't we want undocumented immigrants to have access to health care, when they are people (humans, actual humans!) that we live and work with. Morality aside, aren't we all healthier when everyone around us is healthy? ("Morality aside" is a phrase I'd like to never utter again...)

I went to college with this guy. W&L 1969. Joe is his colloquial name. He's Addison Graves Wilson. An early supporter of Richard Nixon in 1967. Sigma Nu (or something like that). Here's a good one: his date (Nancy Moore) to some major weekend (probably Fancy Dress where the men wore either tuxes or confederate uniforms (except for Pooky Levy who came dressed as a dog)) dumped him after that weekend and married Strom Thurmond.

Thank-You Joe Wilson for calling Obama a liar. That he is. Illegals will be covered. They will not have to pay the health care plan tax nor will they be fined for not having health care. They will be treated anytime at an emergency room and we will pay for it. On July 30th the Dems voted down a bill by Rep. Nathan Deal that would require health care providers to use a verification program for health care services Their identity as to their legal status will not be questioned as it would be in other countries or in their own country. First, most of the people in S.C. that I have known do not find disrespect to the office of the president humorous or acceptable. I found this website while searching for info on Mr. Wilson. I usually do not respond to these types of comments b/c most people who make extremely strong statements on a forum such as this are cowards...Anyway, S.C. is a horrible place to live and work....so please spread the word and encourage people to stop moving here!! The folks who have responded to this site as well as other sites making light of the situation should take a moment to realize that this country is not moving forward.
We are steadly falling further and further behind other countries because we are seemingly unable to get it together. There seem to be many people like "KarenL" ,and "taint", floating around with stupidity on their lips and hate in their hearts. (Thankfully not the majority.)
A citizen of the US, should be "informed", "active", "respectful", and "vote responsibly".

I told them if they hear any teacher or student say anything they disagree with...they should stand up and yell YOU LIE. This is America and we have freedom of speech. Ok, this is not an issue of Reb's hating Mexicans (they really don't), its sustainability. I have worked for one of the largest construction companies in California for over 20 years and we have employed several thousands of people in that time. Close to 65% being legal imigrants, the rest being American citizens. Over the years I have been told by a vast majority of the legal Imigrants, that they are not really ok with illlegal migration. What country am I living in? Our "president" is turning a BEAUTIFUL, supposedly capitalistic, democratic country into a socialist country full of people who want something for nothing. I'm sorry - I work for a living and I'm tired of giving my hard-earned money and getting nothing in return.
Um...this healthcare plan is charity and I do not care of illegal immigrants PAY for their healthcare. They are closing high school football and choir programs for American children in order to feed and educate illegal immigrants. This country can not sustain the people that are born here. The last stat I read on homelessness said that one in four homeless people, in this country, was a child - I'm sure that number has now increased. Is it ok with you bleeding hearts if we make sure that the people in this country can have a place to live, be educated, fed, receive health care before we try to take care of the rest of the world? Ayn Rand - who came from communist Russia made it very clear that you can not build a society based on taking from the producers and giving to the non-producers and our forefathers made it clear that charity has no place in government. It is NOT MY JOB to support strangers - that is what hard work and family is for. (Although I am not opposed to supporting American children, the disabled or the elderly.) I have a job and insurance. I do not need this man who seems to have forgotten that today is 9/11 telling me that I need to volunteer, give of myself, and be a better human being. This NOT the job of the "president". His arrogance is astounding and the idea that our country is buying is over the top, preaching, one-sided, racist (professor at Harvard, Kevin Johnson) crap is scaring my to death.
Good for Joe Wilson!!!! Loophole or no loophole - Obama was, at the very least, hiding the portion of the bill that would allow for illegal immigrants to "buy" their own insurance. Obama said that the healthcare program would not apply to illegal immigrants - at the very least he lied by omission. So he got called out. Big deal! Joe Wilson was representing a huge number of American people who do not trust Obama. Again - what country am I in? Obama does not represent me and he is trying to shove his agenda down my throat. He does not tell me what I need to do - I tell him what he needs to do - he is a representative - that is all - he does NOT walk on water, he is not our savior. He is here to represent the American people and follow the Bill of Rights and Constitution - which he has conveniently forgotten exists.

This man would not want his children to speak to a teacher, coach or minister as he spoke to our President. He is an uneducated,ill mannered and poorly spoken government representative who has disgraced his state and his country. Get your facts straight, Joe. Hey Joe, can you read? If so, you did not read the President's agenda or speech. Maybe you cannot read. Maybe we need to see your Highschool diploma, maybe you do not have one. Obama, and his wife Lurch, have been telling lies to the American public for several months now and finally, someone had the guts to say what we're all saying to our TV sets as we sit and watch him lie and lie and lie. Just sit back and wait and see. When change comes I hope that if you still have a job you will not mind paying for health care, bailouts, abortions, food stamps, low income housing, babies being born on crack, meth users getting dental care while in prison, terrorists in prison, and whatever else is passed. It won't be your right or that felling of the warm and fuzzies. It will be demanded of you. Maybe, in the end all of us hard working, God loving conservatives let you liberals pay our way though life because getting up every morning to pay my dues and build a honest life for myself sounds more and more like a good change for me.

I am very concerned about some of the comments I read here and have heard on TV. Some people are so consumed with hate and bigotry that they have stopped believing in democracy. The nation voted and the majority elected our president. Who are the minority to tell us our president lies, isn't a real American, is a Muslim, going to have death panels, turn our children into an amry that will fight against us. I feel as if I have landed into some kind of crazy limbo. We have Americans taking guns to rallies to try to intimidate those who disagree with him. We have Congressmen who are afraid of members of their own party because nothing else explains why they don't correct the misinformation that is being spread to and by their constituents. Today I watched a man who said while he doesn't want to start a revolution, he would. Does he think that it is a sign of democracy to want to overturn an election where more than 50 percent of the population cast their votes for Obama. I understand how he feels. I have felt that for the eight years Bush brought shame and disgrace to our country. I did my part by standing for hours in very hot weather to vote against him. I cried and screamed at the harm I felt he was doing to our country.(Make fun of me if you will.) But what I never did was want to over throw the government. I understood in a democracy you don't always get your way. I understand that you think Obama is bad for the country, many of us felt the same way about Bush. In three and a half years you may be again in charge of the country. I hope and pray not, but if that is the way the vote goes - this is a democracy. Now I hear people saying they want to take guns to the capital, some threaten revolution. In my heart I think some of you would celebate the death of the president. I don't care what you have done for the country in the past or now. If you advocate any of this, their is only one word that really applies to you and that is traitor.

Do we think we can get by with name calling and it not affect others? I surely believe the Bill O'Riellys and the Rush Limbaughs have inspired the choir. They seem to behave & say anything they want.What is good for the goose can be good for others too.This meaness and lies should be stopped by accepting our own responsibity with courage to speak up for our own beliefs.
