This should be obvious, but I postulate that perhaps Ms. Graves is using terrible in senses 1 or 2, not sense 3:
1 a: exciting extreme alarm or intense fear: terrifying b: formidable in nature: awesome (a terrible responsibility) c: difficult (in a terrible bind)
2 : extreme, great
Jen - could you be anymore vague? If you don't like the work then perhaps you should explain why. Maybe even going back to your copy of How the Critique Art for Fun and Profit, to see how to do it again.

if the paintings themselves are considered idylls, then "paintings" and "idylls" are interchangeable terms in this context. this is why some confused "[the quality of] the paintings" with "[the scenes depicted in] the paintings." sometimes you need to use a little more than basic english to get your point across.
Actually I meant quite literally, somewhere I've seen that panda and that lion under a tree with a toucan on the lowest branch. But thanks for the references Jen.
