Terrible? Wow that's the harshest I can recall you being to a Currently Hanging artist. Poor artist :-(

Your critique is more derivative than the art.

This should be obvious, but I postulate that perhaps Ms. Graves is using terrible in senses 1 or 2, not sense 3:

1 a: exciting extreme alarm or intense fear: terrifying b: formidable in nature: awesome (a terrible responsibility) c: difficult (in a terrible bind)
2 : extreme, great

Jen - could you be anymore vague? If you don't like the work then perhaps you should explain why. Maybe even going back to your copy of How the Critique Art for Fun and Profit, to see how to do it again.

Whoa. The IDYLLS are terrible, not the PAINTINGS. This is clear from the basic English I used.

Oh snippy critic, party of one! It's not clear. Plain and simple.

if the paintings themselves are considered idylls, then "paintings" and "idylls" are interchangeable terms in this context. this is why some confused "[the quality of] the paintings" with "[the scenes depicted in] the paintings." sometimes you need to use a little more than basic english to get your point across.

Is this painting a reference to another? I recognize it from my childhood but can't place it. Help.

Sorry I got snippy. Bad moment.

@9: It feels to me like Edward Hicks's Peaceable Kingdom series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Hick…) with sort of fraktur overtones (http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archive…) -- but cold, like Alex Katz (http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&cl…).

Actually I meant quite literally, somewhere I've seen that panda and that lion under a tree with a toucan on the lowest branch. But thanks for the references Jen.
