Reading Today: Bumbershoot Edition

Three good events at Bumbershoot today:

In a 1:45 event titled The Enablers Have Spoken and You're Fine with Spencer Moody, musicians better known for their rock and roll read from their poetry and literature in a program curated by Anne Bonny owner Spencer Moody, who has already proven with his charming junk shop that he is a fine curator.

S.E. Hinton reads at 3:30 pm. Hinton is the somewhat reclusive author of The Outsiders. This is a very rare public appearance. Hence: Somewhat reclusive. I have not read her work in decades, so I'm unprepared to announce her greatness to the rafters, but if you have a bookish teenager, you should definitely bring him or her to this event and make the child read Hinton's books.

And Zak Smith reads at 5:45. Smith's new book is We Did Porn. It's about porn. It looks quite good. His last book featured a drawing for every page of Thomas Pynchon's novel Gravity's Rainbow. It is an important book that you should own. Smith mixes literature and visual art in a way that no other artist can quite manage.

You can read about all the Bumber-events here.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here. And if you're planning on staying in and you're looking for personalized book recommendations, feel free to tell me the books you like and ask me what to read next over at Questionland.

The McSweeney's event was fun yesterday. I just happened across while I was wandering around, but all four authors were very funny.

Am I the only one who finds authors reading their own works to be painfully bad? William Gibson is our greatest living writer, but his appearance in the U District, to an adoring crowd, was awk-ward. We knew it. He knew it.

John Hodgman is the exception to this.
