Observation of the Day

Posted by on Tue, Sep 1, 2009 at 11:32 AM

there's something different in the air this week... something's been cleaned out, a little rain has swept away months of grit and sweat, there's a clearness and a simplicity to the streets, to the sounds of the city are calmer and softer... something's missing, and i like its absence... what is it?

the burners are gone. can you sense it? there's not a single burner left in this town.

Wait, those are hippies at some folk-rock jamboree. Burners listen to angry music on the set of Road Warrior while setting shit on fire...

Burning Man is a place to have a bunch of strangers tell you your art is great, even if the bulk of society thinks it's terrible. Oh, and a place to have lots of unprotected sex.

@3 You obviously haven't met the new burners. *dry*

@Xom You obviously missed that this is the "I can't believe I'm not going this year" year.

@ 1 and 2. Burning man is like woodstock and burners are people who are in denial that they really are hippies.

I can think of over 20 burners off the top of my head who aren't going this year (me included).

Oo oo. Let me guess. Burners = Hippies = People who don't shower. I sure hope whoever posted that doesn't have any Tom's of Maine or Burts Bees products. Healthy, Environmentally friendly personal soaps MADE BY HIPPIES!

Burners /= Hippies for christ's sake. Burners are edgier and generally smarter, but just as annoying, although not quite as smelly.

Sheesh. Noobs.

Some of the alt-burners are in town for PAX and Bumbershoot, especially to perform at them.

Only half the mileage on my car is from driving to Burning Man. The other half is runs to TP Fnarf's house.

All the real burners are heading out to Bronson this weekend anyway...

Bronson Weekend= The real burn in the area for old skool burners looking to get away from the commercialized joke the real burn is/has become.

Hey Reality Check @17: I may sound like a big fat square here, but what's "Bronson Weekend"? Does it happen out at the nudist park at Lake Bronson?

burners only think they're edgier and smarter than hippies. that's what makes them infinitely more annoying than you're average hippie.

if i really wanted to be surrounded by privileged self-obsessed upper-middle-class white cisgendered heterosexual people, which is pretty much 99.9999999% of Burning Man these days, i'd fucking go to Bellevue, not Black Rock City.

You guys are just haters...Burning Man is about "You're here to create. Since nobody at Burning Man is a spectator, you're here to build your own new world. You've built an egg for shelter, a suit made of light sticks, a car that looks like a shark's fin. You've covered yourself in silver, you're wearing a straw hat and a string of pearls, or maybe a skirt for the first time. You're broadcasting Radio Free Burning Man — or another radio station."

Yeah and it costs WHAT????

"Tickets purchased at the Gate are $360, payable with cash or credit card only."

holy fuck, you have to pay for the trip down, then to top it off THEY CHARGE YOU ALMOST 400 BUCKS per head?!?! Wow. No wonder I have never known anyone who has gone. Most of my friends have better things to "invest" in, like taking care of their families or paying off home loans and car payments.
