Health Confused About Health Care Reform?

You have a lot of company. Two thirds of Americans don't understand what the Obama administration and Democrats in Congress are proposing, according to a new CBS poll. Which, of course, is why reform opponents and fear-pushers have found such fertile ground this summer.
If you're confused and in Seattle, I recommend tonight's health care town hall meeting with Congressman Jim McDermott at the University of Washington. (Meany Hall, doors at 6:15 p.m., town hall meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m.) One way or another, it's going to be clarifying.

Here's something I haven't seen anybody discuss or explain: the "public option" (if it survives) is supposed to "cost" $1 trillion over the next decade.
Well, 50 million currently uninsured (who are expected to be the primary customers of the public option) paying an average premium of $200/month (some would pay more, some would need to be subsidized) would bring in $120 billion a year, or $1.2 trillion in a decade. That should cover expenses of care plus $200 billion for setup costs. Then there are all the savings from use of electronic medical records, and mainstream care instead of unpaid-for E.R. care, etc.
Why the fuck do the presumed champions of the public option keep making it sound like there will be another $1 trillion added to the deficit to do this when it's clearly not true? They are handing their opponents a giant turd on a golden platter to fling back at them.

The Democrats are loosing this battle badly because they were totally unprepared for the right wing attack which even my dog that's been dead for 10 years could have seen coming.

Rob @ 2: The Democrats aren't making that argument because it isn't true. The CBO scoring concluded that the proposal will cost $1T over the next decade net of premiums. It should also be noted that there took a good bit of legislative slight-of-hand to even get it down to that number, like back-loading a bunch of costs after the 10-year mark and not doing anything for the first few years of the 10-year period.

Can we all just admit this whole healthcare reform charade has just been a huge fraud?
The Dems won't even discuss simply dropping the age restriction from Medicare and having everyone pay the low Medicare premiums, they've no serious proposal to control costs, and the Obama Administration made secret backroom deals with the insurance and drug companies to somehow guarantee their obscene profits until the "system" collapses.
The Dems' puppet-masters don't want healthcare reform any more than the Republicans do.

Keshmeshi @6, I know how expensive and daunting a task it is for individual doctors and even large group practices to convert records. But, God, the paper records are such a horror. I think of all the thousands of hours spent transcribing, copying, faxing, and then trying to make sense of the results of those efforts, as well as the need to maintain the bulk files even of inactive clients (sorry, I hate the word "patient"). When I went to transfer my records from a world-famous clinic to my current rural provider, I was outraged to discover that they would only provide the most recent one year of records without steep additional costs, even though some useful and expensive baseline test results were buried in older records. I should not have to pay dearly, twice, for access to my own medical history. Digital files would reduce marginal costs for provision of older records.

Real reform means dropping the age requirement for Medicare, negotiating across that entire patient pool for lower procedure and drug prices, and letting the insurance companies find a way to compete, specialize in gold-plated additions to the basic Medicare plan, or go out of business.
