Another Angle on Disney Buying Marvel

Posted by on Tue, Sep 1, 2009 at 7:35 AM

Why would Disney want to buy Marvel?, I asked a friend of mine who's a comics writer (who I'll leave unidentified, other than to say he's won multiple Eisners). He replied with characteristic brevity: "To get at the boys. They already own the girls."

With their many princesses, Disney owns the imagination of entire generations of American girls, who are then herded like cattle to the hyper-profitable tween bullshit of Hannah Montana etc. With ownership of a stable of superheros, Disney can now capture the boys. The hand that entertains the cradle rules the media world.

A friend of mine who is a serious comic nerd and also works in the entertainment industry said the exact same thing. I suppose it makes a great deal of sense.

Are they going to have Spidey banging Minnie, now? I would totally buy that.

Bluh? What was the other angle? This is the only angle I ever heard mentioned in any coverage of the story.

The far more insane part of the story is the sordid dealings over the last ten years that resulted in the sleazy former toy biz character Ike Perlmutter personally becoming an instant billionaire off of this deal.

And you thought I was joking about them having Captain America and the Hulk doing dance movies with Selina Gomez ...
