Which Is More Dangerous?

Posted by on Mon, Aug 31, 2009 at 12:32 PM

Rasmussen Reports surveyed Americans last week with a simple question: "Which is more dangerous — alcohol or marijuana?" And here is what Americans said:

Alcohol — 51%
Marijuana — 19%
Neither are dangerous — 2%
They are both equally dangerous — 25%
Not sure — 3%

Oddly, younger folks (who are more likely to smoke pot) view marijuana as safer than their parents (who are more likely to have swollen livers from a lifetime of drinking). But surprisingly, mothers seems to be leaning toward pot tolerance:

Fifty-three percent (53%) of women say alcohol is more dangerous than marijuana, compared to 48% of men. Men by a two-to-one margin over women say pot is riskier, but women are more inclined to say both are dangerous.

Unmarried adults are more critical of alcohol than those who are married. Those with children at home think alcohol is more dangerous than those without kids living with them.

Thanks for your input, America. But here at Slog, your opinions are more valuable than America's (and, as always, legally binding). So here's your turn:

Outlaw alcohol.

Well, duh... unless you're doing something inherently dangerous while stoned, alcohol really isn't going to get you into that much trouble.

Legalize pot, sure, but there's enough interest in severely restricting alcohol consumption in this country, I really would rather avoid a pot vs. alcohol debate go before lawmakers.

Hmmm, so basically only 25% of people thought Marijuana was more dangerous, even though only one of them will result in legal trouble if you're caught partaking of it on your front lawn.

Back in the day, before DUI became a mortal sin, I found that being drunk added about 10 mph to my speed, while being stoned subtracted about 10 mph. Your mileage may vary.

When considering the following:
Physical harm to the user
Addictive potential of the drug
The drug's overall impact on society

Of course alcohol is more dangerous. Even tobacco is more dangerous than marijuana.

The times I've gotten the sickest from alcohol overindulgence have been when I also smoked pot.

That said, alcohol contributes to vastly more traffic accidents, domestic violence, addiction, and disease. Not to say we need to banish alcohol, (some more acculturation of sensible drinking and management of alcoholism would be stellar, for sure) but we need to lighten up on those who light up.

Duh. Everyone knows that once you get married, alcohol increases in awesomeness.

I agree that, in theory, pot is less dangerous than booze.

HOWEVER, the thing that bothers me about pot - bothers me to the point where I stopped smoking it - is that you never know where it comes from, and what's been done to it. At least booze - because it's legal and regulated - has quality controls. Pot, who knows? Unless you grow it yourself, of course.

When I used to harvest pot for the Mexican druglords in Olympic Nat Park the conditions were terrible- no clean water, no facial tissues, little food, no toilet paper. We wiped our asses and blew our noses on the product.

marijuana should be legal, its an absolute slap in our faces that the government will openly abuse their power for money and control while innocent victims of their "War on our Own Citizens" lose everything they have including their families and are left to rot in prison with REAL criminals who kill people. Its inhumane, and its done right in front of us. They wont even talk about the bad drug policy that people are screaming about, they seem to think Americans deserve no more an explanation than this.......

"Marijuana is harmful and has no medical value. Marijuana legalization is not in my vocabulary, and its not in President Obama's vocabulary"

What, we don't deserve to have a look into the claims and science, we don't deserve to live a free life if we use a safer substance? Something is corrupted beyond belief, and I feel the truth is going to come out soon.

Though marijuana with alcohol may increase some risks, especially accidents, in one way it actually decreases alcohol's risk: http://alturl.com/agsh

Where does it say anything about MOTHERS? the highlighted stuff refers to women. all mothers are women, not all women are mothers, and non-mother women may support marijuana at 60% and mothers at 40%. So your claim is not supported by your excerpt.

@14 - well, obviously mothers shouldn't text while consuming alcohol and pot and driving.
