The Mystery of the Bony Box

Posted by on Mon, Aug 31, 2009 at 9:18 AM

A report from KENS 5, a TV station in San Antonio:

The contents of a mysterious container found Monday night in Atascosa County have been determined.

Authorities in Atascosa County said the container appeared to contain hair and bones. They were concerned that the materials might be human in nature.

The container's contents were suspicious enough that authorities took the materials to the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office for testing.

Early Tuesday afternoon, officials said they believe the matter inside the container came from an octopus or squid.

Atascosa officials said somebody had found the large container at about 7 p.m. Monday near Hickory Road and Old Pleasanton Road.

Here's the thing: Octopuses and squids don't have hair. Or bones.

The mystery remains.

The corner of Hickory and Old Pleasanton: a dusty, lonely place for an octopus to meet its end.

A different article :

"Remains found in a plastic tub near Pleasanton were sent to a San Antonio crime lab for analysis, but Atascosa County authorities said they doubt they are human.

A resident discovered the remains around 6:30 p.m. Monday inside a tub off Old Pleasanton Road north of the town, said David Soward, chief deputy of the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office.

The resident called the Sheriff’s Office, which collected the material and sent it to the Bexar County medical examiner’s office for analysis Monday. Soward said no bones were visible but officials identified what could be intestines or animal guts.

“I don’t think it’s human remains,” said Soward, who added there were no signs of a crime scene."

It's the rare land-walking furry bone squid! Just be glad someone found it and killed it before it crawled in your window at night and had it's furry bony way with you.

While not strictly bone, an octopus does have a beak. Here is an example of a related, squid beak if you'd like to see one:

I think they're pretty neat.

Was the container a fedex box, with angel wings on it?

@4 Okay, I'll bite.

Is that a pop-culture reference or some true-crime reference?
