Oh, Obama… How Could You??

Posted by Wm.™ Steven Humphrey on Fri, Aug 28, 2009 at 10:56 AM

You know, I was TOTALLY against all those anti-health reform/"death panel" nuts—that is until I saw this shocking video of President Obama outside a town hall meeting WHIPPING AN OLD PERSON AND A FETUS!! (I mean, can't we just deny them health care and let them die naturally?)

ok - I understand there are no "death panels" or anything of that nature but I do have a question/scenario that I need an answer to. And I'd rather just ask it here as I'm lazy and I generally just trust anything I read on the internet.

If someone is on the proposed public option insurance plan and they end up on life support, who decides how long that person gets to stay on life support? I'm assuming the family/next of kin gets to as there are no death panels (obviously).

So my next question is: is there any limitations to this or would we, the public just keep on paying for someone to "live" in this continious vegetable like state because the family doesn't want the person to die?

I'm not arguing for or against anything; I just don't what the government's answer, based on the proposed bills, would be to that proposed situation.

@ 2 - Because that would be racist and as crazy as these people are (which is to say: VERY CRAZY), they are not doing anything racist - in this video atleast. To be fair, I'm watching this without sound, so I'm just assuming they are not screaming the n-word. Correct?

I understand that you think the act of whipping is exclusive to the African American experience but I assure you that people were being whipped long before African Americans were even in this country. So while I get the connection you're trying to make, it is historically inaccurate and it certainly doesn't make these stupid people in the video racist.

It's like this country was just bursting for the chance to publicly make racists jokes and display Nazi paraphernalia... AND NOW IT'S OKAY TO DO IT! WE DON'T HAVE TO HIDE IT ANYMORE!

@5,
Well, the woman IS saying "please don't whip me no more mastuh" in that slave-like accent. I don't really understand that. I don't get the ball-and-chain around the ankle either.

I think these fringe loonies lost their message long, long ago and now just want attention any way they can get it.

@3,
Interesting question.

What happens right now if someone on medicare/medicaid/veteran health ins. has to go on vegetative life support? I think they keep them on as long as the family requests and/or living will states, right?

Anyone know the cost per day is to keep someone on support like that?

(btw, I'm in favor of a gov't, universal health plan although I know you aren't JF... but a good question in any case).

In Jim Crow America racism was a lot more clear and would hold up to some kind of hateful logic. Now racism gets stuffed and denied so it comes out in absurd, twisted outbursts that don't hold up to the kind of logical examination you’re giving it. We all know lynching is wrong and the intent is clear, this theater is bizarre and I could only guess the intent by going to the source of this YouTube clip. I think it’s real and can only fathom the intent and content by reading my gut.

They'll continue to pay for the life-support until the person dies. Humans can not live indefinately on life support. Our bodies have to move around in order to function. The medical folk try to combat this by turning the person over and giving them 'physical therapy', but it is inevitable that the organs will break down. Usually this happens in a matter of weeks - the cases you hear of about people being in comas for 7+ years are exceptions, not the rule.

I know this because my mom was in a permanent vegetative state at a time before living wills. Despite her stated wish not to be placed on life support, she was placed on a ventilator. When her kidneys failed she was given dialysis. When other organs failed they gave her medications to supplement the organs functions. After 6 weeks of this toture she finally died of heart failure.

I think if people who want to be treated no matter what knew what a hell it was they'd change their minds.

If there's a living will it takes precedence as the last known will of the patient. If there's no living will the next of kin's preference takes precedence (under the expectation that they know the will of the comatose person better than anyone else). If there's no living will and no next of kin they pretty much have to keep them on life support for as long as they survive though I don't know if they have to go to exceptional measures to keep them alive aside from the life support.

That's the rule now on government plans, that will be the rule on future government plans and that's the rule for most, if not all, private insurance plans now. It's also the rule in most hospitals regardless of insurance.

At least get a thin person in a well fitting suit to play Obama if you can't find a single black person willing to be in your awful video.

@8 - Thanks! And no, I'm not for the universal health care, but I am for a public option, though it does take some effort to reduce the slippery-slope reaction that was bred into me.

The fact is we, the people, are paying for poor people's shit anyway, so we might as well come up with a more efficient way of doing it.

I, like you, assumed it would take the route of medicaid/medicare.

i think you are wrong. there are legitimate grounds to consider this video racist.
It's true that whipping isn't exclusive to the African-American experience, but we aren't talking about scholars of violence here. We are talking about a very simple message from very simple people: Obama (a black man) will enslave us (white people). Thats why they always call it White Slavery as if that is an especially vile form of slavery (because white people enjoy their freedoms SO much). Has the potential to not be racist, but here the intention is clearly to imply that Obama will enslave us, and that is why whipping is used: as a direct reference to slavery. Its not racist in the sense that it relies on stereotypes and generalizations. There are many kinds of racisms: this is racist in that the "joke" is the race reversal.
